I’ve somehow managed to not lose this and only this pair of sunglasses. I’m not even sure I like them but I can’t get rid of them. They were a free promotional gift from National Geographic for some Mars thing they were doing in like 2016 (hence the red)

sigh I really need to come up with a reliable and inexpensive way to power cycle some equipment remotely.

My #raspberryPi is up and running but the two #SDR software defined radios aren't responding even after rebooting the computer. The computer was involuntarily power cycled twice yesterday when the power went out and when the backup generator transferred the house back to the grid after grid power was restored.

Or maybe the SDRs need to be reseated in their USB ports? 🤔

I had looked into various ways of remotely power cycling the last time I had issues and lots of folks had good ideas but I never identified exactly what I should use.

At least this Raspberry Pi doesn't cook SD cards when it gets involuntarily power cycled.

@ai6yr I think that I need to physically remove and reinsert the USB sticks for the software defined radios.

This happened once before in a similar circumstance a few years back and that's what it took to remedy the problem.

But the Raspberry Pi is four hours away from me and I'm not sure I want to ask my dad to do that for me.

@kc2ihx @ai6yr that might work! I wonder if it would cause issues with these SWRs or with the USB data 🤔

I bet there's an industrial control module that has this problem solved already 🤔🤔

Shared governance is important. Be engaged with it if you have the opportunity. 900 (!) faculty attended this meeting.

@bud_t @academicchatter because of who we work for, shared governance only exists if the president of the institution wants it to exist. It would take Congress to change that which isn't going to happen.

Another significant struggle is that a sizeable portion of our faculty got their degrees with us and have never really known a different academic system. We're significantly inbred and it's going to get worse because almost no one from the outside is accepting our job offers.

Question for my friends:

Is there a reasonably inexpensive device like the app that I can setup to run continuously? I can have power and either Ethernet or WiFi available.

I see that the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has several units that they use for research purposes that are based on so I'm guessing there's a good project I haven't found yet.

It would be cool if I could feed it to the various research projects, too.
