I understand the alternate reality about the last election. But I don't understand the alternate reality about COVID. That's the most wild thing about it.

Is it that COVID isn't really a deadly infectious disease?
Or was it made in a lab?
Or is it deadly, but the vaccine isn't real?
Or did the vaccine cause the disease?
Or is the vaccine ... mind control? IDK?

There isn't really a cohesive story so it ought to be very awkward for any politician to claim to be a champion of this theory.

@futurebird they take as-given that capitalism is good and "their team" is honest/on their side.

Trump pulled the CDC out of Wuhan in the lead-up to covid. He refused to follow Obamas plan, & actively undermined the response with lies etc while thinking it would hurt his enemies (but also just go away?)

Capitalism is eating society, but reps can't blame it. so they see conspiracy.

Fauci lied to make sure there were enough masks for health professionals. Understandable but undermined trust

New York City's libraries can't fix broken A/C during a heatwave, subways have halted making more stations accessible, but instead of trying to fix these critical problems, the Mayor is focused on a useless mask ban that doesn't improve safety, and in reality makes it worse.

@luckytran yes, but have you considered how people from jersey visiting a diner on a daytrip to the city feels? Are you trying to drive them away to NEW New York? You think you can just RAISE FUNDS to pay for things people need? Psh, they're just going to go to New New New York, a city everyone wants to be in because there's no taxes or public transportation but they have like a turnpike or someshit and YOU WANTED CLEAN AIR? Hows about NO, take the mask off COMMIE and suck my tailpipe-19, huh?

Someone trained on the m$ stack isn't going to migrate you away from it. Likewise, if your whole staff is accustomed to m$ products, changing could be a headache. Not to mention the headache of migrating any in-house tools to new tech, likely requiring staff comfortable in 2 separate ecosystems

@randahl ruble firesale, renminbi expansion

Put all the capital in china to bust unions, then undo all the trilateral amoral politicking of the 20th century which was meant to prevent 1/6th of the world's land (russia) from coming together with 1/5th of its population (china). Already building out connecting infrastructure.

Feels like China is the big winner here, speaking realistically. If only the "adults in the room" hadn't put all the factories there.

Every year, researchers discover 2-3 entirely new pathogens: the viruses, bacteria and microparasites that sicken and kill people.

While some of these discoveries reflect better detection methods, genetic studies confirm that most of these pathogens are indeed new to the human species.

Even more troubling, these diseases are appearing at an increasing rate.

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit...

When I bought this titanium teapot as a gift to myself for finding a new job years ago I really felt bad about how much it cost— but I’ve decided it’s, in a way the ideal sort of expensive treat: absurdly durable, timeless, utilitarian, strange.

This one is going in my will. I hope someone takes it with them to space someday. (that is my new heirloom benchmark: how likely is this to be in the 1 ton allowance for those moving to the dyson swarm never to set foot on earth again?)
