Hmm. My employer just sent out an email to all staff reassuring us that they are 'aware' of 'an issue' with payroll, which they're going to rectify as soon as possible.

I mean, I guess it's conceivable that it genuinely is a technical bug. But I'm pretty conditioned to regard all-staff emails about 'issues' with payroll not being deposited on time with a healthy dose of foreboding.

CS student: They had 2FA enabled on the payroll system, right? Riiight? 'Cause no one would leave something that important open to a cyberattack...

Today I was facing a massive 'I don't WANT to go into work!' and then I checked my schedule and realized that everything I need to do today can be perfectly well accomplished with my WFH setup. Nothing too computationally intensive that requires my office computer, and one three-hour zoom meeting that I can use as an excuse to practice my calligraphy while being present on-camera.

yay!

Help me prove a thing to my colleague, who says free food will not encourage students to attend an induction event.

If you were a new Master's student and on the fence about attending an event would free food make you more likely to go?

Our Math Club offers free pizza. There's always at least 30 people. Meanwhile the ACM gave up on free pizza, and attendance dropped like a rock. Your colleague is nuts.

The Holy Roman Empire should never be expected to have given things good names, seeing as how they were not Roman, and made a very strange sort of Empire with elected Emperors.

I've just run across the most egregious example of thesaurus abuse in a student essay I've ever seen. Probably it's some combinatin of AI-generated plus automatic word-replacement, which is useful, because even though I can't prove anything, I can just flunk it and move on.

It's an essay about ERPs. This 🧵 contains some of the best howlers.

'ERPs can be utilized to ponder dialect preparing . . .' -> 'used to study language development'

Youch. I remember the final presentations from my Intro to Philosophy class – at least half the students were reading off their phones, and trying to pronounce words they'd never used before.

Over and over AI is being deployed as a way to avoid the high cost of human mental labor.

You'd rather have a bank of servers huffing clouds of carbon into the air than just paying some people to solve the design problem.

I know hiring programmers to work on UI isn't glamorous, and the work is slow, the results aren't flashy, but we just can't keep on skipping this step or wishing that some cocktail-shaker full of matrices and stolen data will paper over the issue.

Speaking of stolen data, I am so totally stealing this description of artificial unintelligence.

A+, 100%, you win the prize!

So, without in any way detracting from my support for the pro-Palestine student protestors who are being treated appallingly by their institutions all over the country (really, OSU? Snipers?), I do think Columbia made the right call here:
