An emerald jewel wasp looks at those cute posters that have been all over that have a drawing of cicadas and the quote

"Shed your old skin and scream!"

jewel wasp: ... don't see why it has to be my old skin ...
roach (who is on a date with her): --what??
jewel wasp: (eyeing him) ... nothing...

Without looking it up what is closest to 8oz?

(Curious how well the relation between oz and metric is generally known.)

@futurebird I'm guessing C. because the answer is always C.

Over and over AI is being deployed as a way to avoid the high cost of human mental labor.

You'd rather have a bank of servers huffing clouds of carbon into the air than just paying some people to solve the design problem.

I know hiring programmers to work on UI isn't glamorous, and the work is slow, the results aren't flashy, but we just can't keep on skipping this step or wishing that some cocktail-shaker full of matrices and stolen data will paper over the issue.

@futurebird I can assure you my work as a frontend dev is very glamorous and flashy :blobhaj_glare: :BlobhajSadReach:

Did you know you can put a leash on an ant in "Minecraft Create" and lead it over to a train you designed yourself, then give the ant a train schedule and it will drive around and pick things up and drop them off?

I feel like this mod is stalking me and trying to eat my free time.

@futurebird Wait, minecraft has ants now? I need to rethink my weekend plans.

@futurebird Ah okay. Out of curiosity, have you ever played "Grounded"? That has been my go-to ant game, but I've been looking for others.

If I were rich enough I’d

  1. Buy google adsense a huge buy
  2. target ads at myself: audience of one
  3. make ads transparent zero width images
  4. Experience peace at last.

Why can’t they sell a “no ads” global package? I have blockers on most of my computers and phones but now and then I still see ads and I can’t deal with it. I know I can pay more than these people with their little before and after images of gross skin— and the ads for games that don’t exist and gambling ads.

@futurebird That's actually a good idea.

This could have happened two years sooner but Trump appointed EPA people blocked it.

One of them was Nancy Beck of the EPA Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention.

Before working at the EPA, she was an executive at the American Chemistry Council, a chemical industry lobbying group for FIVE years!

Why can't we get those revolving door laws? So, you can't be at the EPA after OR before being a lobbyist?

The reporting on this in papers is terrible.

In NYC all snakes are protected (no matter how common) and you may not catch or kill them. (you’d think a people so harassed by roaches and rats wouldn’t need to be told!)

(escaped exotic snakes may be trapped)

@futurebird kinda funny I was rewatching the simpsons yesterday, just happened to see "The Whacking Day" episode where it's apparently a town tradition for everyone to grab a club and spend the day whacking snakes.

“some animals act strange during an eclipse”

(but none so much as humans— everyone is outside in nyc holding colanders squinting yelling at each other not to squint and wearing goofy goggles… but oh yeah it’s the squirrels that are “acting strange”)

chris_hayes ,
@chris_hayes@fosstodon.org avatar

@futurebird I'd argue we're the normal ones and the animals going to bed instead of watching cool science stuff are the weird ones! 😤

I’ve been listening to “Sticky” by @LaurieWinkless and it’s really good! I’ve got to tell you about the “bubble cathedrals/ architecture” Basically, the leaves of Salvina, a water fern are permanently submerged and yet they remain dry. No one could come close to emulating this until they noticed the leaves have both hydrophilic & hydrophobic patches. Effectively shaping the air bubbles into arches. A kind of negative architecture of air! (image not from the book)
