I don’t own a car and I ride my bike a lot, often on very busy city streets. I always wear a helmet when I ride — not because it makes me less likely to get hit by a car, but because it makes me less likely to suffer from brain damage if and when I do get hit by a car.

However, as Dave Walker (@davewalker) points out, there are MANY other and much better ways to make cycling safer for everyone. 🚲

@breadandcircuses @davewalker somewhere, many moons ago, I read that having laws that force people to wear bike helmets actually leads to a reduction in a population's overall health because it reduces the overall amount of exercise occurring. I'm also pro helmet and wear one 99% of the time, but I'd prefer if it were only a legal requirement for kids and not adults

Its always remarkable to me to think about Descartes and Galileo being contemporaries: so we know how the former reacted when the latter was imprisoned:

“I inquired in Leiden and Amsterdam whether Galileo’s World System was available, … I was told that it had indeed been published but that all the copies had immediately been burnt at Rome, and that Galileo had been convicted and fined. I was so astonished at this that I almost decided to burn all my papers … .”

@futurebird "cogito ergo sum" is genius, the only cast iron proof of existence, however, mind body dualism was a giant leap in the wrong direction that is still doing harm today

@jeffowski Thanks for adding alt-text, as a hilarious bonus it turned "enough" into "ugh" on my phone!

Last night I finished The Book of Love by Kelly Link (A book recommendation I got from @pluralistic )

Sure enough, it is absolutely incredible. I knew absolutely nothing of the novel or the writer when I started which added to the mystery, I had no idea where it would go and I think that made it even better
