One flaw of the LLMs I've used: they will never give you harsh criticism. While it would be nice to think all my writing is just that good, I know there are no circumstances where someone will ask for feedback and it will say “throw the whole thing out and start again.”

breadbin ,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@molly0xfff @luis_in_brief Reddit? So it will advise you to dump anyone you ever mention, say that people on Reddit are stupid, and go into incoherent racists rants and refuse reality at the drop of a hat?

Here's an uncommon device. The EXELTEL II terminal. Equipped with a built in 1200 baud modem, it had a very limited test run in Minneapolis and Omaha around 1990 before US West canceled the project. This one is filthy, having spent over 30 years in a basement. But it works and should clean up nicely.

@Cloudscout Left and right arrows are for losers!

It’s really cool to see some “local” computing. There’s been a lot of cool stuff made here in the past, but I very seldom see any of it online.

Would be really cool to see more of it. Especially the supercomputer and Honeywell stuff. Even Cray is a very uncommon sight.

I can't prevent pixelfed forks, but I will do my best to accommodate feedback and feature requests, and encourage people to take on a more dedicated role within our project!

We are stronger and better together!

We really need a project manager type person to help me prioritize, so I can do what I do best and leave the community management to someone more skilled in that.

breadbin ,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@dansup For big crazy ideas a fork can be better. It can be a friendly one for sure. And if it pans out I think a merge is good idea.

I think there’s been too many forks in anger, and we’d be better off with less of those imho.

Also stale PRs make me sad. Love to see them either merged or rejected (I mean some aren’t good for various reasons).

Good luck!

By refusing to recuse himself from Jan 6 cases, Alito is violating the court's code of ethics, which call for recusal when “the Justice’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned…”

If flying 2 pro-insurrection flags doesn't call his impartiality into question, what does?

breadbin ,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@rbreich At this point I wish the Democrats would run on an impeach the corrupt judges platform and do it.

Even if it can’t work (I’m under the impression you need 2/3rds of the votes) per se I want everything they have ever done to be examined and broadcasted far and wide.

Because SCOTUS is suppose the be the best of us, and now the majority is the worst of us. There should be no higher standard in the country.

We're at a restaurant and the next table over is occupied by 3 young women (probably 19-20 years old). One of them was taking about a family member who said they didn't like to drive at night anymore because they have vision issues and it's harder for them to see. The girl was annoyed by that and said that it didn't make sense to her why the family member doesn't just go get corrective glasses or laser surgery or something to fix it.

Oh, sweet, ignorant child...

Culinary gatekeepers suck. If you enjoy "lowbrow" cuisine, don't let anyone belittle you over it. Reject foodshaming.

I'm an adult who enjoys all kinds of foods but sometimes I still want a bowl of plain buttered noodles.

What are your favorite treats that "they" try to make you feel embarrassed about?

breadbin ,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@Cloudscout Everything I eat is lowbrow :) Not that anyone has tried to embarrass me about it, but I love Swedish pancakes which luckily are very easy to make here in the U.S. as well. Think crepes but slightly better :)

Not to mention, chefs often eat all sorts of cheap stuff. They aren’t the ones caring.

Re: this headline…

Last weekend, I had organised a nice night with dinner and a movie with one of my closest friends, a university lecturer.

They had to cancel, because they were behind on marking students' papers. The reason? The process now involves (mandatorily) using "AI checkers" to vet for students using AI.

This eats whole unpaid days of "work" time for my friend.

breadbin ,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@vampiress If cheating becomes commonplace education stops being common. It’s terrible all around.

As much as I hate tests and testing people (long story) I can’t help but think teaching needs to change so that AI written anything can’t be a factor.

I want a proper ANSI color terminal for NeXT computers. The only apps from back in the day are lost to the sands of time. I contacted the author of one and he is no longer able to generate license codes, rendering it useless.

I think the best option would be to backport the Terminal app from GNUstep but my rudimentary programming skills wouldn't even get me started. I know there are others who would like such a thing. Maybe we could pitch in and pay a professional to do it. But how would we find such a person?

breadbin ,

North Carolina's House has rejected the anti-mask bill! The bill will now go through a compromise process, which could include re-adding a health exemption.

More work needs to be done, but this shows that advocacy is making a difference. Keep going!

50 billionaire families have already spent $600 million on the 2024 elections.

More than half—$416 million—went to Republicans or conservative groups that want to extend Trump's tax cuts for the rich.

Could there be a clearer example of how big money corrupts our democracy?

It's ridiculous that most Democrats are just watching passively as Republicans are passing mask bans. In states where Democrats hold power, they should absolutely be passing laws that codify and protect people's rights to wear a mask.

Finally began watching The Bear.

It's a case study in how to create tension when directing. So many tricks in the bag there.

  1. Avoid wide shots, stick to (sometimes extreme) close-ups - hard to tell the geography of a space
  2. People talking over each other
  3. Cuts are done in such a way to make it unclear how much time is passing - we get the FEELINGS there's time pressure on what's going on, but it’s shown without much focus on clocks or reminders of a deadline
breadbin ,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@vampiress Close ups in anything makes me a bit nervous to be honest. It just induced a sense of something is going to happen.

Almost irritating when then nothing happens:)

I enjoyed the show. No idea if it depicts real kitchens well or poorly. Some pretty nifty writing and I was quite surprised at times.

First proper trip in the new car today. About 175 miles round-trip. Averaged 275 Wh/mi. That would mean roughly 325 miles of range on a full charge. WAAAAY better than the 260 miles of range claimed on the window sticker.

@Cloudscout @robdaemon For a non-EV owner, I’m assuming the actual numbers for the EQE ended up higher than the Polestar.

The chart certainly is interesting, but I’m curious of if the lying was “unneeded” or if they could never had a good range in the first place.

That said, even if the range was great I don’t think I’d like to be lied to.

Just thinking out loud:)

    You know what is missing from most companies' employee training curriculum? How to submit a problem/incident/support request. I don't mean which form to fill out or what number to call. I'm talking about providing the bare minimum amount of information required to address the situation.

    I'm so glad my help desk days are decades behind me. Seeing the crap that support people have to wade through these days is angrifying.

    breadbin ,
    @breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

    @Cloudscout Same with bug tickets. I’ve gotten so many “high priority” tickets yet nobody has ever trained the people writing those tickets.

    Why high priority bad? Because the priority level in question means that the company is hemorrhaging millions or similar. Not that one person is a bit inconvenienced for a short while.
