Comment on semantics:

I’ve heard humanity described as being composed of “self-interested, rational economic actors” to help us understand economics.

Like, we all want the eggs from the farmers’ market that were laid by the happiest hens. A farmer can assume we’re rational & self-interested when pricing her eggs so she can try to sell enough of them to make a living. $2/egg won’t fly because stores sell them so much cheaper.

Think I’m saying morally bankrupt, anti-social hoarders have rational self-interest but so do normal people like you & me. I’m fizzling out here but either way hoarding’s bad :)

Looks like this comment is protected under the Brandenburg test. The first amendment is incredible!

Glad you’re fired up about human rights, but I’d hope in the future you could focus on more constructive calls to action. Plus now that you’re on that FBI watch list, showing them you cooled down could save some federal resources :)

The Internet Con by Cory Doctorow ( lemmy.world )

I'm currently reading this book and found it to be quite accessible even for someone who's not very tech-savvy (me). I think people of lemmy may appreciate its discussions of how to break up the big techs, the way big techs keep users by essentially holding them hostage, etc. I'm also a huge fan of its publisher (Verso) :)

Hey, I recognize that name!

Just grabbed the audiobook from my local library.

Have a summary of what you’ve read so far? Found a short review. And a longer one from AP.

…somebody reported on this?

Imagine having the universe of 45-related content in front of you and selecting that.

Best practice is to provide non-aff + affiliate link, calling the latter out clearly.

Otherwise you’d cry! Thanks for this :-)

A former colleague’s parents were scammed; their “kid” (the scammer) had a “broken nose”.

The [exact ad from the] specific advertiser will never be seen again, so indeed the issue has been mitigated.

Other bad actors are still out there, though, hence the need for the report button the dev mentioned.

School ( lemmy.zip )

EDIT: A lot of you are reading into the tweet while still somehow agreeing with the overall message. No one is saying we should eliminate music programs or that we should teach toddlers about healthcare plans. The tweet is making this thing called a --checks notes-- joke, that also conveys the message that schools could teach...

And why* can’t we just get a pre-filled tax return and confirm it yes/no?

Because that would hurt the poor b/c only the wealthy would still hire tax experts if tax returns were pre-filled.

Naw, the current system doesn’t hurt the poor at all!

Using glacial ice in drinks is a common practice in Greenland, and, over the years, several entrepreneurs have unsuccessfully attempted to export it.

The fjords around Greenland are usually full of icebergs that have broken off glaciers which are connected to the Greenland ice sheet.

The first stage of the shipping, from Greenland to Denmark, is, Arctic Ice argues, of low carbon-intensity, as most refrigerated shipping containers that leave Greenland would have been empty, because the country imports more frozen goods than it exports.

It has now committed to becoming fully carbon-neutral, and once the supply chain has been established and Arctic Ice’s carbon footprint calculated, all excess emissions will be calculated and compensated for …

“Helping Greenland in its green transition is actually what I believe I was brought into this world to do,” Rasmussen said. “We do have that agenda running through the company, but we may not have communicated it well enough yet.”

This is what green transitions look like!

Such horrible taste.

Wish the article sought scientific opinions on impact.

Shouldn’t service providers be hashing the plaintext passwords that show up in dark web leaks to see if matching users reused those passwords?

Musk sent the funniest response he could possibly think of.

Remember middle school?

NO I WON’T MAKE OUT WITH YOU!

Or was that elementary?

brbposting OP ,

Data inconsistency sounds right. Here are notifications I’m just receiving for 5-day old replies.

Was seeing comments/posts out of chronological order on a user’s profile yesterday as well.

Previous debate on this

My thinking: forget about technicalities of wherever he was an inactive “moderator”…

…focus on where he was an active administrator. NSFW ex. (link courtesy previous comment thread). Which includes the subreddit the OP is about, to be sure.
