The bystander video is shown here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1188314849017274

Video shows three cops chasing a suspect. The first cop tackles the kid and proceeds to punch him. The second cop run up with gun drawn and shots the kid in less than a second while the first cop is still busy wrestling.

IMHO, the 2nd cop's shooting was incredibly unsafe since he was shooting a suspect wrestling another cop from less than 1 foot away. As far as I can tell, the cop basically ran up to the kid, put his gun to his head, and pulled the trigger. You can not tell from THIS video if there was a gun in the kids hand, but I can't believe the first cop would not have tackled him if there was! There is no way this is a good shooting.

Thank you. It should be fixed now.

"the 1% get all the money"
"And then what"
"They get to hoard it"

Texas school district agrees to remove ‘Anne Frank’s Diary,’ ‘Maus’ and 670 other books after right-wing group’s complaint ( forward.com )

Conservative activists, led by a local pastor and outspoken Israel advocate, pushed the district, Mission CISD, to excise books mostly about gender, sexuality and race. Their demands represented an extreme version of a nationwide culture war over books that has played out in recent years — and ensnared a number of books with...

The reality is that both sides are laying out unrealistic terms for surrender right now.... and that's fine. The start of a negotiation is always to start with a stated position and go from there. This war will end at the negotiation table... at least we hope it does becuase unconditional surrender won't come from Russia, but it could come from Ukraine.

The real question is have both sides suffered enough for a negotiated end to this war? Look, it sucks, but that's the truth of it. It would be good to see an end to the fighting and dying in Ukraine. Wars suck. The only side winning in this war is the US. They/we spend a pittance of money and watch Russia burn their future generation, military reputation, and global standing to the ground. That's the #2 political opponent the US has in the world, and it's acting as a great example for to show China (the #1) why it should behave itself over Taiwan. Win win!

But wars suck. It's easy to sit on the sidelines, but there a lots of people fighting and dying over there who have nothing to do with make the decisions for war. Yes Putin's demands are ridiculous, but so are Ukraine's. That's fine. Put them in a room and hopefully they can figure out way to end the killing that's in between the two.

blady_blah ,

Mainly 100% removal from Ukraine (not unreasonable, but also not going happen without Ukraine doing much better on offense) and a shit ton of reparations for all the damage done and people killed (this is never going to happen).

IMHO The most likely scenario is Russia keeps 50 to 80% on land they've already captured and Ukraine agrees not to join NATO and the war stops. Keep in mind much of the land that they're currently fighting over will be useless for a generation due to all the mines and shells shot into it. (Maybe "useless" is too strong, but it will take a lot of work to make it safe for living and farming.)

That's not fucking true. They would smear Jesus Christ so hard.. a poor brown skinned, long haired hippy peacenik liiiiberal pansy. About the only thing they would like about him is that he hangs with prostitutes. But even that they would get all snooty about.

An actual Jesus they would hate with the passion of a thousand suns.

AI is just a tool. It's like a computer. Right now it's possibilities look limitless, but soon we will know the limitations and it will just be another tool in our toolbox. It will drive some people out of jobs... mostly for the betterment of society, but the disruption will be hard for anyone who is working one of those jobs, so there will be complaining. For example, is it really good for society to have people reading prearranged scripts off a screen at massive soul killing call centers?

As will all technological innovations there are advantages and disadvantages. Learn to adopt the advantages and look to fix or attack the disadvantages. IMHO, the biggest issues will be in privacy and monitoring, so we should be looking for laws and protections we look to put in place to shield ourselves from this.

If you don't like it, don't use it. But this will be like computers, robotics, and cell phones. If you go full Luddite, you'll be left in the dust in both in culture and job prospects. This is change and change is scary, but the old adage of "adapt or die" still holds true.

blady_blah ,

Not the OP, but of course there are SOME people in the group who will be anti-jewish, but it's all a question of percentages. If it's 1%, then who the fuck cares? If it's 50% then it's a big deal. I'm sure it's somewhere in between. From what I saw, the vast majority of protestors were not anti-jewish even if they were anti-Israel, however the new media quickly smeared the two together to waaay to many of their statements. It was really disappointing to see that message on so many different platforms.

blady_blah ,

You must be a troll. Are you really not able to say "quit killing innocents?" That goes for both sides BTW. "Quit killing children, quit killing innocent people." Is that really hard? Protesting the people who are actively killing children and innocents using American made bombs seems pretty straightforward. Don't kill innocent people. Don't commit genocide.

blady_blah ,

I'd even go simpler than that. "If calling people by their preferred pronouns is one of the hundred biggest challenges...." Inserting "correct" into the statement just begs to get into an argument with a conservative and feels like you're trying to force them to accept a different reality than they want to.

IMHO it's simply a personal preference thing. Let people live how they want to live. You don't have to convince everyone that Sally is really a woman trapped in the body of a man, you just have to say that it's her preference you call her as a "she". People should have the freedom to define themselves. That's it. End of story.

My conservative neighbor brought up trans stuff thinking he'd use all the conservative media talking points and my answer was simply "it doesn't really bother me. I'm a live and let live kind of guy. If they want me to use a different pronoun I'll do my best to switch to that pronoun." If you spin it as a freedom instead of a reality then it's easier to accept.

blady_blah ,

I feel like this argument would have worked a lot better before Trump.

Do you want slow incremental positive steps forward, or massive bat-shit crazy, weaving-all-over-the-road while toying with destroying democracy, self-serving, ultra-rich benefiting and fuck-the-little-guy theocratic "reform"? Hm... that's a tough one.

blady_blah ,

I mostly agree with you, but IMHO Biden has been better than any other president in my lifetime... and I'm 50 years old. His position on Israel is awful. I would 100% go nuclear (pun intended) on solving global warming. But beyond that, I think he's done a pretty good job with the hand he's been dealt. The presidency is not a monarchy. No matter who is elected it'll be a long term battle to right this ship.

blady_blah ,

Capital gains isn't a "2nd tax on money people already earned". If I put my money in a bank account and earn 10% interest (laughable I know) and I earn $10k on the $100k I have in the bank, I pay income taxes on the $10k. If I buy a piece of land for $100k and I sell it for $110k, I pay capital gains tax on the $10k. In both cases I didn't work for the money and I only paid taxes on the profit.

Capital gains tax is NOT taxing money twice, and even if it was, sales tax is a much more direct "taxed twice" tax. There is no such rule as "money can't be taxes twice" in our society. Capital gains tax should be done away with and all profit should just be called "income" and taxed accordingly, just like the rest of us who work for a living.

blady_blah ,

If you have no margin of error then that's the way it is. Every vote can be a veto.

What's really interesting is how the bar was 60 votes when this was happening but it's now 50 votes due to massive watering down of veto power in the Senate.

blady_blah ,

It's a common phrase for to describe prioritizing bad news over normal news in media... basically saying bad shit gets top billing on news outlets. For example, murder, accidents, deaths, etc, they will lead the news feeds. This tends to give watchers/readers a skewed perspective as to how bad things are in the world. For example, murder rates may be down but media constantly hyping up the latest murders may get people to think it's the worst it's ever been... reality be damned.

Can someone explain to me what "collateral for loan is realized gain" means?

Lyft and Uber say they will leave Minneapolis after city council forces them to pay drivers more ( apnews.com )

Lyft and Uber said they will cease operations in Minneapolis after the city’s council voted Thursday to override a mayoral veto and require that ride-hailing services increase driver wages to the equivalent of the local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour....

blady_blah ,

This is so weird. Why would they not just pay their drivers more. Add it directly to the cost of doing business. What's the issue?

It's like making a minimum wage for all fast food employees. All fast food establishments now have higher wage costs. So what? The cost of a hamburger goes up $0.50. All your competitors now have the same costs. How does this change anything for you? Versus going out of business?

Think about if only Uber left. That's a lot of extra business for Lyft. What's the big deal? Hm... maybe they have to cover the salary even if the driver doesn't accept any rides? Maybe that's the real issue. How do you guarantee drivers are busy and not just signing in and doing nothing and canceling offered rides? That still doesn't seem that hard to fix.

blady_blah ,

The thing is billionaires will always use more resources than you. They will have more stuff. It'll have more houses. They will have boats, private planes, huge mansions, and more money than they know what to do with. They will always use more resources than you. If your whole statement is we shouldn't try to solve global warming because some people are rich, and we're doomed to all die. And by the way, The billionaires will have a nice air-conditioned bunker while the rest of us die.

I'm all for trying to solve wealth inequality, but it shouldn't get in the way of solving a major environmental disaster.

blady_blah ,

I don't want Texas to secede, they would be a shitty ass neighbor.

blady_blah ,

I don't think it's good to have such wealth inequality, but I do this general investment into the stock market should be encouraged.

401ks are so much better than pensions as a retirement vehicle. Better return on investment and more financial separation from the company I work for. I never worry about someone raiding the pension fund or a company going bankrupt, and I've received much better return on investments than the numbers you hear from pension funds! That's not even considering 401k matching......

Your comment makes no sense. Try replying to what I wrote please.

blady_blah ,

Ah, this is "a lesson about how to exclude white people (still the majority of the country) from any social justice movement." Characterize and belittle any of them who try to engage and support a cause.

If they can't relate and want to have a conversation about it but challenge some of the ideas then they're the baddies. If they don't just repeat the movement's slogans without thought then clearly they should be excluded. This honestly feels like a right wing subversion tactic.

Yes, I know there are people like the post. People who love to argue and do it for the fun of arguing. Those people do cause trouble if you're trying to get a consensus or get something done.... But just like "welfare , queens" or criminal illegal immigrants, they feel like the minority where this is intending to paint a large group of people with the same brush.

It's usually not good to make fun of people who are trying to help, or you teach people to shut down and not engage with your cause. If the statement is you have to have experienced or you can't relate, then why bother having a movement because you're not trying to convince anybody who isn't already on your side.
