I really like Kavita outside of its PDF handling, which is very frustrating

The discussion about "Lemmy and the GDPR" is interesting.

    Some broad thoughts:

    1. Software does not need to (and, indeed, cannot) comply with the GDPR

The GDPR imposes obligations on people, not software.

There is no such thing as "GDPR-compliant software".

Well-designed software may help a person in scope of the GDPR comply with it, in respect of their processing of personal data, sure.

This line of conversation is curious to me because while ActivityPub and related protocols represent a step in a direction of the internet from times past, there's a whole bunch of people in this thread who use it like the internet of now, with their (presumably) real name and a need for such data management features despite the technical hurdles of trying to apply that to a decentralized network that propagates data across different hosts and jurisdictions.
