During my childhood, there was a mail-order company that sold gift-baskets of individually wrapped bite-sized cheese wedges.

Sort of thing one would get someone of a certain generation as a holiday gift, that you'd only see sold retail in a shopping mall with enough foot traffic to justify said company having an outlet there.

Of course, can't recall what this company was (or perhaps still is) called. Search engines if 2024, as one might imagine, are no help for such historical trivia.

Anyone?

"I think the missing item here, the thing that they really want us to forget…true object of all this forgetting, is the George Floyd Uprising.

"They want us to forget that, a mere four years ago, the president of the United States cowered in a bunker underneath the White House as rioters shook the gates and destroyed the guardhouse….They want us to forget what it felt like to take the streets with one another, they want us to forget that we fought the police and won…"

Clearing Bedouin encampments.

Clearing homeless encampments.

Clearing protest encampments.

The same .

The same underwritten.

The same of dispossession.

The same .

Clearly.

Racists ain't "stupid".

They just like power.

Racists don't do "stupid" things.

They just like power.

Intellectual ableism is also a power trip.

What's staggering about NASA getting Voyager 1 to resume sending data...

Is that we don't write software like that anymore.

"When I reached out to talk with a wise NPR connected elder about it, her advice was to stop taking those calls. Pretend that I didn’t know the facts, because they challenged the narrative about who we were, and how my hubris had contributed to it."

tumblr: you are KILLING them!

(I'm both happy, and slightly offended that I never get comments about how "doing that is, in fact, abusing ants"... I may however make such comments... but that's a whole other story. Nah, only puppies and kittens get this kind of worry...)

so must I go too, brisk and brave, and quick, like you

Was drawn up short only by your thinking that such commentary needed a subject heading.

Like, we know you by now. What else would it be?

I have complex, deeply mixed and confused feelings about jargon. Part of me loves jargon. I love precise terminology, little used words, and they can be so useful. At the same time, I'm not a fan of that feeling that you would be able to understand something ... but someone piled up jargon in the way just to keep you out.

Is there a way to thread the needle? To indulge in obscure vocabularies but avoid gatekeeping?

@futurebird AnRel's video essay "The Art of Semantics" is perhaps helpful in navigating this question?
