“I cannot emphasize this enough. You either need to be on the absolute cutting-edge and producing novel research, or you should be doing exactly what you were doing five years ago with minor concessions to incorporating LLMs. Anything in the middle ground does not make any sense unless you actually work in the rare field where your industry is being totally disrupted right now.”

Don’t start the thing “as soon as the other thing is over” just start the thing now— the other thing may well never end.

@futurebird Wow. I needed to hear this. My brain does that to me — segments linearly to the point of absurdity

Best movement of “The Planets” by Holst?

@futurebird My intro to this work was the synthesizer version by Tomita that I bought in the early 80s for ethereal sounding music to use for a school project — I ended up loving the album and listening to it often as a teenager on the cassette I recorded it to.

Fun fact: "The Tragedy Of the Commons" is a hoax created by the white nationalist Garrett Hardin to justify stealing land from colonized people and moving it from collective ownership, "rescuing" it from the inevitable tragedy by putting it in the hands of a private owner, who will care for it properly, thanks to "rational self-interest":

There are ants in Minecraft! That was enough to get me to find my password and download the game. This is part of "Alex's Mod" which is often paired with " Create" which is a popular new mod that adds trains and machines and many fun things.

I might start a create/alex's mod server this summer. Would anyone want to play some low energy vidja games? I promise I'm NOT just starting a server so I can find a way to make the ants take over the world. (Sincere! I'm a very chill player!)

@futurebird I haven’t played in years … used to have an account on a nicely modded server … wouldn’t mind playing some of this again in a nice spot

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Chuck Todd

Credit where credit is due

NBC hired the former RNC chair and Big Lie supporting scumbag Ronna McDaniel, now they need to face the music.

Exactly! All this “let the people decide” talk is remarkably backwards. The people decided in November 2020: Trump lost, and attempted an auto-coup in response. That is the sole reason why the insurrection clause came into play at all: January 6 was the anti-democratic part. 1/

@andrewhinton@jawns.club avatar

@tzimmer_history @mralancooper It’s a signal to me that whoever is saying “let the people decide” has a narrower definition of “people” than mine

I love Ian Banks' books because he frequently takes the time to imagine a utopia, not as an allegory for why utopias are impossible (and in the extreme sense they are, we all get that, it's not interesting) but rather as an exercise in seeing how close one could get to a society with real freedom and few contradictions.

I think it's a good exercise. OK fine so how would a world without hunger or unwanted suffering work?

He took on the topic of gender in this spirit and it's glorious.

@futurebird I’m working my way through Phlebas and like it mostly but I got a bit weary of the Horza character’s “manly space hero” tropes so it’s slowing me down :-/

When reading of Fermi paradox, that outstanding question "why do we seem to be alone in the universe?" I've encountered many observations about the uniqueness of Earth.

"Were it not for Earth's protective magnetic field life would be impossible."

"Were it not for Earth's unusually large moon..."

etc.

The answer to the paradox these answers claim is that Earth is much more unique than it appears and life far more fragile.

It's all very plausible.

@futurebird One way I think of this is maybe from the pov of “the universe” we are just one snowflake that happened to have a particular arrangement of conditions and atoms… but it’s no more special or important than any other unique snowflake. It just seems that way to us because we are in it.
What “life” is, is our idea — not something intrinsic to the universe.
