Torridon in Wester Ross. The image shows a view over stony beach in the foreground with the tide out but a little water visible on the left. Beyond it is a distant line of white buildings stretching across the frame with, above it, the huge bulk of a mountain reaching up towards the top of the frame.     St Rule's Tower in St Andrews, a magnificent viewpoint well worth the climb to the top. The tower was built in about 1123 and predates the start of building work on the nearby (now ruined) St Andrews Cathedral by almost 40 years.     A triumph of over-engineering, the Forth Bridge, often called the Forth Rail Bridge since the arrival of the Forth Road Bridge: now one of three great bridges across this part of the Firth of Forth, each built in a different century.     The Forth Bridge. The image shows the Forth Bridge seen from the south-west with evening sun illuminating its whole length. There are five stone supports at the near end, leading in from the right of the frame, and these are lit by the sun to a bright honey colour. The metal structure of the bridge is in the lower left of the frame and is bright reddish-orange. The sky is blue, and this is reflected in the water.

    Idyllic Kishorn in Wester Ross, with the mountains of the Applecross peninsula in the background. What was at the time the largest movable object ever made by man, the 600,000 tonne Ninian Central Platform, was built nearby in 1978.     On this day in history. The Declaration of Arbroath, probably the most important and influential document in Scottish history and considered by UNESCO to be of world significance, was dated 6 April 1320: making it 704 years old today.     The Declaration of Arbroath. The image shows a replica of the declaration on display in a Perspex box. It is a large single sheet with closely spaced lines of writing at the end furthest from the viewer. At the near end it is cut into multiple vertical strips, each of which has a red or black wax seal on it. AT the bottom of the image is an interpretive panel giving background to the declaration.
