Tippon , to [Outdated, please look at pinned post] Casual Conversation in The frequency and duration of ad breaks is beginning to make me feel like I’m in that black mirror episode where they had to pay to stop ads from constantly playing.

Do people consider switching their car insurance?

Absolutely. I don't switch mid term, but I definitely look at switching at renewal time. Use a comparison site and check what's available.

Pretty much every year the comparison sites give me better prices than my renewal, sometimes by a massive amount.

Is Brian Cox trapped in the rubble too, or is he digging his way in just to eat the trapped lady?

Tippon , to Asklemmy in What are some things you can/should cheap out on?

Hobbies for beginners, if you want to take up knitting then start with a cheap kit and upgrade as you get more serious.

This is the big one. If you're starting a new hobby, it's easy to fall into the trap of buying loads of expensive kit because it's shiny and new. Buy the cheaper versions first and learn what you actually need. If you need to upgrade then, at least you know what to buy.

Obviously this doesn't apply to safety kit 👍

Tippon , to Technology in Stop using Opera Browser and Opera GX

I had the same. I installed it and realised that it had imported my Chrome bookmarks. I didn't purposely choose that, so was pretty annoyed, but thought that maybe I'd missed a check box. When I realised that it had made itself my default too, I uninstalled it.

I reinstalled it a while back to try again and to test a website I was making, and after one update I launched it and it played a really loud sound. It was late at night and my kid was in bed in the room above me. Because I wasn't expecting any sound, never mind anything that loud, I panicked and didn't turn the volume down in time.

After I got my kid back to sleep I uninstalled Opera permanently.

Tippon , to Linux in Home Theater Laptop

Any distro should do it, you just need to set your media centre software to run at startup. I've done it with Plex and Kodi, and I think Jellyfin does it too :)

Tippon , to Linux in Thinking about making the big switch – recommend me a distro!

What would you suggest is a better distro for a new Linux user? I've found Mint to be great out of the box, and only needs minor tweaks if you want the Microsoft fonts, for example.

Nice writeup 🙂

Tippon , to Soil Science in Where do I start with learning about the soil in my backyard?

I don't know much about gardening, and this is something that just came to mind, so take this as the half formed idea that it is.

I wonder how well using the soil from a raised planter would be at making the garden soil better. For example, if you used raised planters for a year or two, then mixed the soil from them into the soil in the garden. Maybe doing a section of the garden at a time and completing it over a number of years. Any compost you make would help too.

I know that obviously putting nutrients into the soil is going to be good for growing plants, but I don't know how helpful it would be if you could only do part of the garden at a time.

Tippon , to Sysadmin in Rustdesk: a open source remote desktop software

Thank you :)

I've found that VNC can have some slowdowns, but it seems to be faster than the others I mentioned. I can't remember why I switched away from it now though.

It sounds like it's worth giving Rustdesk a try, so that might be my next project :)

Tippon , to Sysadmin in Rustdesk: a open source remote desktop software

Do you know how it compares to NoMachine, Any Desk, or Team Viewer for speed over a LAN connection? I've tried all three in the past, and get slowdowns every now and then, even if the network is fine.

Tippon , to Greentext in Anon notices what they've taken from us

There's a setting in Onedrive to keep a copy of everything on the device. It will still get stored in the cloud too, but it means that everything will be available if the internet goes down.

Quite a few of the books have been recorded as new audiobooks lately. Some of them are here:

Tippon , to Privacy in How to prevent link hijacking on sites like Facebook, Reddit and Twitter?

There's an extension for Firefox and maybe Chrome that should help. I think it's called ClearURL, or something similar. It removes the trackers from the ends of URLs

EDIT: That's assuming that it's a legitimate tracking URL, and not something that's been added by malware.

Knowing Konsi, she probably checked it twice too 😁
