Tippon , to retrocomputing in Got a new windows 98 gaming PC, and boi she's huge!!

A lot of cases from back then only took 80mm fans. To move more air, they had to spin faster and produce more noise. The loud fans were the upgrade 🙈

I've had a look, and I wasn't a member. I've seen the site before, but apparently you didnt have to be a member back then.

I do have some good news though - I'm a member now :D

You just need to click through to the forums and read the sticky mesage that asks if you're looking for the projects. It gives you the code that you need. I won't post the link here publicly, but I'll message you now, in case you can't see it for whatever reason :)

Can you send me a link to the site please? I think I joined when the 1080? 77 was released, but I can't remember the name of the site. It's been a while.

If I am a member, I'll see if I can send you a code 👍

Tippon , to Fediverse in Why is defederation an option when Limit/Mute exist?

There have been instances that were defederated for posting nazi / racist content, and CSAM. Do you think that their users should be able to interact with everyone else, or that their content should be stored and hosted on other people's servers?

As far as I understand it, content posted to one server gets stored on every federated server for the other server's users to see. I certainly don't want to see the sort of content that's been defederated from the servers I mentioned.

Tippon , to Astronomy in Regulation needed to protect space tourists from cosmic rays

Usually I'd agree, but if these morons fry themselves, there's even less of a chance that the rest of us will ever be able to go.

Tippon , to Music in Vinyl vs. CD vs. tapes vs. digital. What's your favourite storage medium for owning your music and why?

I love the idea of vinyl, because that's what I grew up with. My father had hundreds of albums at home, and would play a lot of them quite regularly.

Realistically though, CD is better for most of my uses, and ripping them to mp3, or another format now that there's more support for smaller files, covers every use case that I have.

As Scrubbles suggested above though, vinyl wall art with NFC tags could be perfect for me. Maybe some CD artwork for the less influential releases too :)

Tippon , to Music in Vinyl vs. CD vs. tapes vs. digital. What's your favourite storage medium for owning your music and why?

That's a good idea. I've been considering making the NFC jukebox, but I like the idea of having vinyl as wall art too. This would be a great way to have both :)

Tippon , to Astrophotography in Preventing lens condensation on a small compact camera - workaround for heating mantles? + Looking for super cheap tracker (DIY?)

This might work for a star tracker for you

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barn_door_tracker

I haven't tried it myself yet, but I've heard that it works.

I haven't had a problem with my lens and condensation though. It's usually colder outside, so the condensation starts when I take everything inside at the end.

The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of A Window And Disappeared

Thanks for the reminder. My brother accidentally bought me the second one for my birthday a few years ago, and I stopped reading it when I realised that there was a first book. I completely forgot to start the first one when it was delivered.

Tippon , to Linux in What application do you use to rdp into your Linux machine from you mobile (android)

Yep, this is what I use too. The display quality can drop if you've got a slow connection, but it works well.

The downsides are, I don't think it's FOSS, but it is free for home use, and if a machine has been off for long enough to drop off the connection list, you have to wait for NoMachine to detect it again. It needs a way to force it to check for systems instead of waiting.

Tippon , to Linux in What would you change about your favorite Linux distribution?

Debfoster looks interesting, but they both seem to just deal with Apt. Something that covers the whole system would be ideal :)

Tippon , to Books in Currently reading Warm Bodies by Issac Marion... what zombie books is everyone reading?

I like the Dangerous Days books by Baileigh Higgins, but at the moment I'm reading the Orphans series by Mike Evans. I read the first half a dozen books a few years ago, but missed the last couple, so I'm doing a reread to catch up before I start the new ones.

It's about a load of kids who survive the initial outbreak, but their parents don't. The kids have to learn to survive on their own against fast zombies, while not starving, or dying from avoidable things.

It's a good series 👍

Tippon , to Linux in What would you change about your favorite Linux distribution?

A better way to uninstall software.

While I've been re-learning my way around Mint, I've found that some software doesn't show up in the GUI package manager. Removing it with Apt doesn't give the option to remove dependencies or optional extras by default, you have to do it manually. Installing something from Github has to be done separately.

Even if it's an optional extra, some software that monitors installations and cleanly uninstalls them would be handy :)

Tippon , to Linux in Stop being elitist, spread Linux!

I would make an exception for the type of people who only use their computer for the internet. People like my parents, who do about 98% of everything through a browser, and occasionally write a letter.

For someone like them, Linux is ideal. Just explain that Firefox is the internet and rename the office shortcuts, and they wouldn't notice a difference.
