Because most (if not all) members of congress love to beg for money from rich people and are really good at it. It’s the reason they became congress members in the first place. Public funded elections would never be as profitable for them.

Sop ,

The system gets what it breeds… When fundraising is so important you will automatically get congress members with no integrity who already had rich friends or who have great ass kiss abilities. This is just another symptom of the failing of ‘democracy’ that’s bound to happen in a society with class inequality. The dominating class will always use their means to turn the odds in favour of their own needs.

Nice way to twist the story with irrelevant technicalities (that I haven’t been able to verify. Cuba is pretty clear about wanting the US base gone).

US would never give up Guantanamo Bay. Cuba has 0 negotiation advantages because they’re a small poor country whose economy is being crippled by US blokkades for decades.

Edit: Apparently it wasn’t clear that by information I wasn’t being able to verify, I mean the claim that Cuba for some reason would want to have an occupying force on their land and therefore doesn’t want to renegotiate the treaty.

Sop ,

As I said, the technicalities of why the US claims that their presence on Guantanamo Bay is rightful is irrelevant, the reason they still hold it is 100% their militarily and economically domination over Cuba (which the US keeps in place with their illegal blokkades), making it impossible for Cuba to have any negotiation power.

When the contract was made Cuba could not refuse it because the US had already occupied Cuba. A contract that is made with an army standing at your door to invade if you don’t sign it is not a legitimate contract. The US is a coloniser and Cuba is just one of the examples. Cuba got lucky though because they at least got some independence (albeit with constant interference of the US trying to spark a civil war).

Please define the term tankie for me and how it applies to me.

I’m a communist, you can just call it by its name.

Sop ,

The US could have left Cuba after the war was won, and they can even leave today. Implying that that’s not an option is crazy.
Guantanamo Bay is currently used to undermine Cuban independence and enforce an illegal blockade that heavily impacts the lives of all Cuba’s citizens. Implying that that’s not a bad thing or that the US should not stop doing active harm to Cuba’s citizens in this way is pretty disgusting imo.

Starving a whole country because you don’t agree with its politics is monstrous behaviour.

Sop ,

Call it what it is: they’re corrupted.

Antifa movement originated in Germany.

Bro what is Palestine supposed to do? Disarm and allow Israel to kill half of them and use the rest as cheap labor 2nd degree citizens?

Most of the Israeli attacks are not to fight Hamas but to spread terror over the Palestinian people. Israel are the real terrorists living on stolen Palestinian land. Israel doesn’t want peace, they funded Hamas because they thought Hamas would keep fighting, which is proven to be untrue as Hamas offered several long term peace treaties by now which Israel denied.

Sop ,

Maybe he should first stop killing lgbtq+ Palestinians

Correcting a non native English speaker on their English is such an own

People keep asking me what "my plan" is. I'd like to get your thoughts.

Not looking to start a debate, and as an anarchist I've come to a pretty solid conclusion that election isn't going to fix anything, but I also see the point that Trump and his supporters are more extreme fascists than the obvious fascist currently in office....

Sop ,

To me voting is kind of irrelevant because the people in power are the capitalists and it doesn’t really matter who you choose as their representative. I do vote but I don’t hold any value to it. If I were in the US I’d vote 3rd party because my values just do not allow me to vote for someone who actively supports a genocide.

I find more value in creating a strong leftist community that includes mutual aid and political activism. Historically disruptive activism has achieved more than elections so I like to spend the limited energy I have to activism.

I see that a lot of people around me don’t feel any responsibility towards volunteering work and helping their own community, because the liberalist ideal we grow up with is that self growth implies community growth (????). So I try to give the people around me the opportunity to see the value in volunteering and creating a stronger community. Unions are honestly the best place for this because they actively improve the lives of the people who put in the effort and is therefore the most rewarding.

Sop ,

Your comment is kind of funny because it’s definitely problematic in several ways. So I’m not surprised at all that you have heard from others before that you’re part of the problem. When enough people tell you that, then maybe you should do some selfcrit instead of continuing to victimblame women for experiencing sexism 🤷

Sop ,

Any man who turns hostile to women because of a bear meme was hopeless to begin with. Feminism isn’t convincing sexist men to not be sexist, it’s educating and empowering women to stand up for themselves and stop accepting vile behaviour by vile men.

Sop ,

It’s naive to think that voters have more influence on policies than donors/lobbyists. If democrats win every election then capitalists will just donate more to make sure their needs are met. All politicians are corrupted by huge sums of money.

Sop ,

Yeah the inability of the people around me to join the protests is so frustrating to me. They acknowledge that something is going terribly wrong in Palestine but they don’t dare being part of protests that are being wrongly framed as antisemitic or violent. At the same time they romanticise previous student protests.

Sop ,

There are literally 0 cases of actual antisemitism during student protests in my country. Jews are very welcome and form a large share of the protesters at the encampments. But to most news outlets chanting “from the river to the sea” is antisemitic.

Sop ,

There is literally an app that zionists use to spam reply pro israel messages on any social media post that involves palestine.

Sop ,

Great, so you also agree that a violent revolution is necessary to stop oppression then

Sop ,

I think that’s what the comic you commented on is trying to convey. Arguing that violence isn’t a solution is silly, because oppressors will always use violence to prevent an uprising.

Sexism is somewhat of a regular occurrence on 196 and personally that really throws me off. I report sexist memes but mods there do not seem to care as the posts are never removed.

I think trans men are better at recognising sexism for obvious reasons than cis men and I think that as long as it’s a regular occurrence on the biggest community of this instance it will be a reason why some trans men (and cis women for that matter) decide not to stay here.

Sop ,

The Sydney Sweeney meme was pretty sexist. There are semi frequently memes where the centre of the joke is a woman’s body, where I will find gross comments as well.

Most of the memes are fun and trans positive, but there is definitely a pattern of objectifying and sexist jokes that are not being moderated (as I said, I do report but no action is being taken). I have also found the community very hostile against observations of sexism, which absolutely does not help. Personally, as a trans masc person who has experienced a lot of sexism on the internet when I still presented as femme, I do not feel welcome there.

Sop ,

Critical statements have no meaning when they are still actively supporting the genocide with weapons. The US has the power to change the situation but they refuse to. Why? Because the white house is full of racists fucks who don’t care about Palestinians.

Sop ,

I thought we moved on from these gross objectification jokes.

Rulerrection day ( leminal.space )

Update: Thanks to a few of y'all who got me to look at things differently I think there was a miscommunication. I called my mom, and sorta cleared things up, they said they thought that my message out to them was saying I was planning on celebrating trans day of visibility, and not just mentioning it off hand after accepting the...

Sop ,

It was absolutely a normal thing to mention trans visibility day and you deserve to be seen by family too! I don’t think the person you’re replying to has much experience in being trans and navigating family so don’t take their response too seriously.

Sop ,

The rules are intentionally vague and information is intentionally not easily available. Additionally, many workers are not in a position to claim their rights because they are living paycheck to paycheck and legal processes are expensive and last very long.

Sop ,

I hope you never have to experience how hard it can be to actually get your money. And as I said, even if there is a case it can take a very long time before you see any money. For someone living paycheck to paycheck this can mean losing their house. Put the risk of losing your job for making a case on top of that (employment at will). I understand completely why many workers don’t do it. The system is made to work against them.

Sop ,

Yes you did well, go back to bed love
