    Sentinel

    This is lovely Lómagnúpur, one of the most recognizable mountains in , with drapes of mist hanging around it.
    These cloud formations are know as stacked lenticular and are created by strong winds.

    In the Icelandic Coat of Arms there are 4 protectors, and one of them is the giant who lives in Lómagnúpur, protecting the coast from all evil.

    A photo of an oddly shaped mountain, with a wide, flat, near-vertical front and sloping sides. The dark rock is mostly hidden by wreaths and scarves of cloud, one layer is quite low and obscures part of the lower slopes completely.     Complementary Colours

    The cold cyan of the early morning contrasts with the orange tints of the rising sun. Mist clings to the slopes of Búlandstindur, and the waters of the fjord have a fragile ice crust at the shores.

    Little Orange Lighthouse

    Built in 1920 and rebuilt in 1930, this is the wonderfully tongue-twisting *Svalbarðseyrarviti. There are many such lighthouses around , and most of them are automatic and unmanned.

    This one is on the eastern shore of Eyjafjörður in north-eastern Iceland, just to the north of Akureyri.

    Belt Of Venus

    "An hour of quiet shortly shall we see;
    Till then in patience our proceeding be."

    This atmospheric phenomenon is visible during civil twilight, above the anti-solar point. The sunlight scattered by fine particulates causes the rosy arch of the Belt to shine high in the atmosphere.

    Pink Dawn

    For me, there is little that is more inspiring than opening my bedroom curtains in the early morning and being greeted by this kind of stunning beauty.
    This is why I keep a camera upstairs - these moments are so fleeting, but so very rewarding.

    A photo of the early morning sky. A few trees can be seen at the bottom of the shot, but they are bare and almost leafless. The sky is filled with a lovely, rippling cloud with a dominant ridge almost in the centre which is being highlighted by the low angle of the sun. This contour is from top to bottom but there is also sculpting from left to right. The higher points of these ridges is coloured candy pink by the sunrise, shading into a subtle pastel orange. The more shadowed areas are a subtle purplish lilac. Near the bottom centre, a small flock of birds is flying across.

    Summer Snow

    An afternoon drive in Fjallabak, the "back mountains" in southern . We stopped to look at Landmannahellir, a well-known cave, and our guide parked overlooking Löðmundarvatn lake.

    The sheltered flanks of Löðmundur (473m/1552ft) still retained some snow, even in August.

    In Summer And In Winter

    In terms of height this lovely falls is relatively small, with only a gradual 6m drop, but it stretches across the mighty Þjórsá river. It's the country's most voluminous waterfall at 360m³/s even though the water volume has been diminished by ≈ 50% because of the 5 hydroelectric dams built upstream.

    The same waterfall photographed from approximately the same position, but this time in winter. The road bridge is still visible, but the rocky banks are covered in icicles and the gravel banks have become icy clutter. Chunks of static ice are clogging the river but there is still clear evidence of strong water flow. The sky is overcast again, and the riverside vegetation is now brown and withered.

    Ice Palace

    The transparent turquoise ceiling of a guide-led trip into a meltwater cave in the glaciers flank. These features are unsafe, and should never be entered alone. Unfortunately, we were there at the same time as three parties of other tourists, queued up outside and waiting for their turn. But they did provide scale to my shot!

    A photo taken from inside a cave. The low ceiling is comprised of thick, semi-transparent turquoise and blue ice. Dark areas can be seen which correspond with patches of snow on the other side of the ice. The surface of the ice is rippled, almost like the inverted surface of choppy water.     Vog

    A portmanteau of "volcanic" and "smog", this eerie veil was created by gas from a .

    The eruption releases steam, as well as carbon dioxide (CO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and other gases.

    In this shot, the gas has reached the sea by crossing Vatnajökull glacier, cooling it. The steam has condensed out, the sulphurous oxides have formed a high, blue haze and the heavier sulphides have formed a layer above the water surface.

    A photo of a landscape. In the foreground is the dark silhouette of a coastline and promontory, and the sea is filling the rest of the bottom third of the shot. The sky is fairly clear cyan except for a few unusual exceptions. The first is at the top of the photo, there is a strange, wispy veil looking like pale blue chiffon. At the very top of the shot, where it becomes more dense, there is a slight yellowish tinge to it. On the horizon, immediately above the sea there is what looks like a slightly opaque layer of thin cloud. This is actually a heavier gas which has settled above the surface of the sea. The water is reflecting sunlight centre left, but it's yellowish and odd.

    March: The same river and waterfall but, in this photo, the scene is covered in ice and snow. The upper platform is still visible but now nobody is standing there, as the path is actually closed. Areas of the riverbank and canyon where the spray from the drops was most dense are now choked with ice in beautiful formations. At the top falls, icicles like organ pipes have formed, almost filling the space between the falls and the riverbank. Opposite the lower drop, a huge block of snow-covered ice cornice has formed, jutting over the lip of the canyon.

    August: A wide river flowing towards the viewer and through pasture land drops dramatically over a jumble of rocks and into the top of a canyon. A natural platform of solid rock is jutting into the side of the falls, and people can be seen standing on it. The swift waters then turn through 90° before dropping into the lower part of the canyon which is hidden from sight at this viewing angle. A stub of dark rock is almost central at the crest of the lower falls. On the left is a path leading to the platform and people are walking up or down.

    River Bells

    February: I saw these lovely ice formations as we walked along the bank of Svartá ("Black River") in Skagafjörður, NE #Iceland.
    I've had several failed attempts to find out what they are called, so I named them myself.

    The edge of an ice crust, probably with vegetation embedded in it, is hanging in the water. Successive freezing nights and changing depth has coated them repeatedly, leaving these lovely natural sculptures.

    A close-up photo of a river bank, with flowing water on the right and at the bottom, and an ice crust on the top and left. There is a visible gap below the ice sheet and above the water surface. Along the edge of the ice, strange icicle shapes have formed. At the top, they are quite slender and holes can be seen between them. Further down the structures are more bulbous, about the size of a man's fist, almost the shape of a spring onion or scallion, and are opaque ice. Immediately above the flowing water, the icicles become more transparent, apparently wet, and are split into smaller, drop-like shapes clustered together. The overall impression is of a hand bell shape, and this is what I chose to call them.

    In Summer And In Winter

    This is lovely Fláajökull, the "Sloping Glacier" in south-western .

    This creeping glacier is an outlet from Vatnajökull, and reached its maximum expansion in ≈ 1894. It has receded ≈ 2 km (1.25 mi) during the last 100 years, leaving a glacial lagoon at its snout.

    Almost the same shot as before, but this one has been taken in summer when the snow is at its minimum. The foreground now is darker vegetation, the sky above is heavy with cloud and the light is from the left. The edges of the glacier are now more distinct, and the base rock shows through more clearly. The ice is moving in from the upper right, across to the centre and then takes a dog-leg turn to the right as it falls over the ridge. From there, it flows slowly towards the right and spreads out nearer ground level.

Above it are two distinct peaks, spindrift snow is whipping from them showing that the wind is from the right. Some dark bare rock is visible but mainly the mountain is covered in ice. The glacier begins quite high up on the mountain, and pours in slow motion towards a ridge, where it drops suddenly before levelling out again near ground level. The sky above is cloudy but blue, and the sunlight is from the upper left. Power pylons are visible at the snout.

    Cold Feet

    February: Visiting a frozen waterfall in the Highlands of with a guide, and he led one of our party across the knee-deep snow to a safe viewpoint. I wasn't confident enough to follow them!

    Hrafnabjargafoss is only really accessible in summer, because it is located on a highland road that is closed to the public in the winter months. Even in summer, it can only be reached safely in a 4WD vehicle.

    In Mountain Shadow

    Standing at the head of Súgandafjörður, on a lovely autumn day.

    This used to be an isolated fjord and didn’t connect to the road system in Iceland until 1940. Even then it was only accessed via a challenging mountain road. The 9.1 km Vestfjarðagöng tunnel wasn’t built until 1996, and is the only tunnel we've ever been through that has a T junction at roughly the central point.

    Seasonal Sentinels

    November, September, and February. Three shots of the same mountains, three different moods.

    These memorable peaks are visible from the main ringroad (route 1) and I snapped them during different visits, years apart.

    Akrafjall (1151m) and Sólheimafjall (1171m) in Blönduhlíðarfjöll near Varmahlíð in Skagafjörður, north-western .

    The same two mountains, taken from slightly nearer than the first shot. This time the ground is free from snow and is covered in golden vegetation, suggesting autumn. The lower slopes of the two mountains are touched by sunlight from the right, and clouds have created shadow across the flat tops of the peaks. The bare rock is dark grey, and a sprinkle of snow is visible on the tops. The sky is cloudy again but with some clearer patches.
    The two mountains again, this time taken from the tarmac road leading towards them. The peaks have more snow across them, but some dark rock is still visible and the shadows show that the light is from the right. The curved valley between them is much clearer in this shot. It has a river cutting through from the base of the valley and into the foreground on the right. The roadsides are brown vegetation with some farm animals - probably horses - grazing in a field on the left. The sky is clear cyan until just above the mountain tops, where some cloud is sitting.

    Two stately mountains, lit from behind the viewpoint. The wide peaks are almost horizontal, and their flanks are softly curved displaying their glacial origin. To reinforce this, a glacier has cut between them at some time before disappearing, and has left a scooped valley at almost the central point. In this shot, their sides are mostly snow-covered with dark rock showing through where the wind has scoured the ice away. The rest of the landscape around is snowy and frozen. The sky is almost completely full of snow cloud, solid and yellow-grey. Two photographers are visible in the foreground with their backs to the viewer.

    Midnight Sun

    The sky didn't fully darken while we were there, it turned to a lovely, silvery twilight. Blue sky or Blue Hour, there wasn't much between.

The sky looks stormy but is actually quite clear with strips of dense cloud, the background is more pearly grey than cyan. The sea is only slightly rippled, some low rocky skerries can be seen further out into the bay. The horizon is a dark line, and patches of light are visible on the water. The whole scene is in shades of silvery greyish cyan with a central stripe down the surface of the sea. It's peaceful, and very still.

    Home Of The Winds

    February, and a farm nestles at the foot of Hlíðarfjall. This 1116m/3660ft high mountain is better known from the other side as it stands above Akureyri, and contains the ski slopes.

    Plunge Pool

    This was one of the first times we'd visited gorgeous Seljalandsfoss, and we discovered when we arrived that we were almost the only visitors at that time. Imagine that - the whole place to ourselves.

    A photo taken from a high viewpoint of a landscape containing a lovely horsetail waterfall dropping into a deep plunge pool. The water is white all the way down to the point where it meets the pool, and a fan of spray and white water shows the force at which it strikes the surface.     Water Power

    This beautiful canyon was created by erosion from glacial meltwater cutting through the palagonite over millennia. It has carved strange, twisted pillars of rock standing on either flank of the river. A well-laid walking trail climbs the eastern side for about a mile, ans contains many observation platforms.

    A photo of a canyon with a river running through it. Gravel islets are visible. The canyon walls are brown and grey rock, covered in mossy vegetation on the more horizontal slopes. These walls are quite vertical, in some places leaning in towards the canyon. Along the right side, at the top, seven or eight people can be seen on the grassy slopes, lending scale. The sky is uniform grey and the light is quite diffuse. It's dramatic, and beautiful.

    Horses On A Hill

    Iceland in February, very beautiful but with unpredictable weather. We never travel without a change of warm and dry clothes, plenty of water and a high calorie snack. This was the tail-end of a strong wind storm, and we were glad to see it finish.

    Black Beauty

    The volcanic sands of Reynisfjara, near Vík í Mýrdal in southern .

    This strand regularly features in lists of "World's Top Beaches" due to its cleanliness, water quality and sheer loveliness.
    If it was rated for swimming and sunbathing, it would get 0/10 every time!

    The basalt stump in the centre is Arnardrangur (Eagle Rock) and in the distance are the famous Reynisdrangar.

    Canyon Cascade

    There are some lovely and quite famous valleys in southern #Iceland, this one is unusual because the entrance is blocked by a large, dome-shaped rock.
    Stjórnargljúfur (𝙎𝙩𝙮𝙖𝙬𝙣-𝘢𝘳𝘳-𝘨𝘭𝘺𝘰𝘰-𝘷𝘳𝘳) gulley also contains a river and its waters cascade beautifully over this block.

    Auld Reekie

    "Old Smoky" - from the cloud of smoke ("reek") that was always hanging over it due to smog and the sea haar inversion holding down the home fire and industrial smokes.

    Interestingly, the Icelandic word "reyk" means "smoke" so Reykjavík is literally "bay of smoke."
    Both are from Old Norse "reykja" = smoke/steam.

    Lang may yer lum reek!

    Snow Dome

    November: A shot from a plane flying at 6500m between Reykjavik to Akureyri. The accumulation of snowflakes on the top of Hrútfell (1396m) eventually flows as part of a glacier - Hrútfellsjökull.

    The other mountains are Innra-Sandfell and Femra-Sandfell. Bláskógabyggð in the western Central Highlands of #Iceland.

The peak itself is frosted with snow and ice, and a tuft of cloud is pointing away from one side like an inverted beard. The top third of the mountain has almost vertical sides, the lower shoulders are more gently sloped and gradually flatten out to ground level. It's distinctive, and very lovely.

    A photo of a landscape, taken from the surface of a lake with a turquoise iceberg floating in it. Smaller pieces of ice dotted around the water surface suggests that there are many more, but unseen. On the other side of the water on the right-hand side is the end of a glacier tongue, again the ice is cyan but very cracked and ruffled as it cascades down towards the lake. In the centre of the shot is a dark brown mountain with another ice tongue tumbling slowly down, this one is shaped like a hooked claw. The sky is misty and it's difficult to tell where the higher ice ends and the cloud begins. On the far left, at the top and slightly off-screen, is the sun, shining with a yellowing light suggesting the early stages of sunset. The scene is reflected in the rippled surface of the lake in front of the viewer.

    Ox Valley

    February: Crossing the Tröllaskagi peninsular on a beautifully crisp day. The main ring-road, Route 1, passes between multiple 1000+ metre high mountains as it winds between Skagafjörður and Eyjafjörður in the north of .

    I particularly love this spot, dropping down into Öxnadalur from Krókárdalur, but I'd never seen the road picked out so clearly before.

    Summer And Winter

    This is Gluggafoss, the "Window Waterfall". A slab of near-vertical rock interrupts the drop of the water, causing it to bounce from one face to the other.

    The little concrete bridge across the river Þórðará at the bottom right is still functional, although it doesn't look it!

    Another photo of the same waterfall, this time in winter. The water flow is less, the grassy banks are now brown and gold but everything else is very similar, except that there are no visitors this time.

    Glacial Motion

    Svínafellsjökull ("Pig Mountain Glacier") in the midday sunshine, farm buildings at its foot lending scale.

    The dark lobe near ground level at the snout is from a landslide - the glacier shrinkage has left the side walls dangerously unsupported, and the collapse is accelerating the melt of the ice beneath.

    Forked Tongue

    October: Hjálparfoss in its autumn colours.

    Literally the "Help Waterfall" because travelling by horse across the Highlands via Sprengisandur was long and difficult, and this was one of the first vegetated areas they reached to water and graze their horses.

    The geology surrounding the falls is fascinating, the eruptions of nearby Hekla have left beautifully twisted basalt columns all around.

    A night photo of a fjord. The mountains surrounding the water on both sides are dark rock capped with snow, lit by moonlight which is coming from behind the viewer. The sky is clear of cloud and many stars are visible, including part of Ursa Major (the Plough or Big Dipper). Across the sky from left to right is a string of green light, some of it showing vertical bar structures, some quite level to the horizontal. Parts of it are brighter than others and, in these places, suggestions of different colours can be seen, yellow fading to a hint of red. The green is so strong that it's reflected in the water surface below.
