@jeffowski terms like the "Bible belt" to those of us non-Christians living in the south might as well refer to a noose around our necks. Christians victimize everyone who doesn't follow their BS.

Electric vehicles clearly are better for our climate and environment, at least in terms of overall carbon emissions, than traditional ICE vehicles.

That doesn't mean EVs are good for the climate and environment, though — because they're not. As always, the best option is not to drive a car at all. Instead, if you can, ride a bicycle or an electric bike or scooter or use public transit.

But tire manufacturers really want you to keep driving. And they're okay with either kind of vehicle, ICE or electric. Of course, they would prefer that you drive a large SUV or one of those giant pickup trucks. That makes more money for them because the tires cost more and they wear out faster.

Big EVs are especially great for tire companies...

With their heavy weight and quick acceleration, EVs tend to burn through tires about 20% faster than internal combustion vehicles do, according to AlixPartners. And the tires cost about 50% more.

“If EV does proliferate through the car population like some think, it may bring about what I call the gold rush for tire manufacturers,” said John Healy, an analyst with Northcoast Research.

One impact of COVID that we don’t talk about enough is how people are avoiding medical care because of lack of precautions like masking in healthcare settings. This doesn’t show up as COVID deaths or hospitalizations but delays in screening, diagnosis, and treatment increases the mortality rate of other diseases like cancer.

@luckytran this isn't a Covid only thing. As Americans, many of us avoid going to see a doctor due to costs. Covid just amplified this.

It annoys me how people talk about using social media like it's a vice. And a female-coded one at that.

"Spend less time on social media" is trotted out a virtuous in the same way that "not eating a pint of ice cream" is.

Imagine if in the early days of movable type, there were people going around saying "don't read pamphlets, they are full of misinformation"

Social media is the primary way news is disseminated. It is superseding newspapers and TV as the primary vector of mass media. 1/

@futurebird when talking "social media" it's the mischaracterization of commercialized media sites as "social media". Those sites push engagement by manipulating feeds to drive more ads often with negative mental health consequences. Unlike those sites non commercialized sites like the Fediverse are about socializing and can be a positive influence on ones mental health.
