If you close a register all pipes and joints between the furnace and the register will be under more pressure than designed and can force the joints to cause leaks, this can push humid air into joist spaces as well.

Theres lots of potential issues, putting a damper as near to the source as possible prevents this issue.

Well I hope the seeds can grow through this. ( lemmy.world )

So long story short, I’ve been thinking about doing this anyways, but the city had to put its worst water restrictions into place with an unprecedented water main break. The cities Largest main break which is a 2m pipe (6 foot 6 inches for the neighbours). This means zero outside watering, it’s a great thing I recently...

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

It probably won’t rain in the next week before it’s fixed and the restrictions are hopefully lifted anyways. I would probably just buy a few cheaper barrels at that point as that’s a lot of physical labor.

Edit, yeah checked the forecast, less than a mm expected next week unless we get some afternoon boomers.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

I watched the storm form to the west and it passed south, idk if it hit Okotoks or not though.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Yarp.

SchmidtGenetics OP , (edited )

We were on stage one water restrictions last year and were on an advisory up until a week before the main broke. So I had already installed 2 just a couple weeks ago, looks like I may get 2 more this year or next now though. They didn’t last long.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

It’s $3000 for a stage 4 violation, RIP.

I would hope they wouldn’t come after the people trying to do the right thing, they usually go for education over punishment with bylaw issues, but with the severity of this I think they’ll skip that this time if you’re blatant about it. It’s just food, people gotta eat. I’ll let my lawn and my flowers go.

Like I spent $100 damn dollars on mulch to use as little as possible already.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,
SchmidtGenetics OP ,

That is much better answered by someone else

But it’s basically the nutrient strength of your water, I’m adding nutrients to the water I’m giving to my garden and flower plants, so would like to make sure I’m not giving it too much.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

I probably jumped the gun with the plant supports, I’ve got poly to drape over them, but also experimenting at the same time. The seedling peppers most likely won’t fruit before fall frost takes them anyways. So I need something to account for that if/when I figure a cover system out.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

A variety, bells, habanero, jalapeño, cayanne, dragon roll.

Most planter ones come with cages, I’m also in a valley and the wind gusts, so if bamboo stakes work, that’s a lot better. I also have tomatoe and sunflowers in the same bed though with taller supports anyways, I can build something over the cages and bamboo stakes, but not those.

But in the fall those supports would be in, so want to account for them anyways. I’ll likely make a pvc frame and drape some shade/critter/frost cloths over depending on the needs.

SchmidtGenetics ,

Beautiful, it must have been one of your posts that lead me to the Tomatoe spirals! I saw some colorful ones, but they were from the states and 50% more than the green ones I found.

I think they should be perfect for my sunflowers too.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Hrmm not a bad idea, I could lay tarps across it early season, late season frost would be tough as it would be touching leafs and fruits then. Would be fine for any shade or critter cloths I would think, but it would also make harvesting anything inside of it difficult. Great idea for some other potential trellis for cucumbers though!

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Yep that’s part of the plan, will need a new timer/splitter though. For now I just manually turn it on or just every second day. Will need to see if there’s any drought restrictions too, because we were limited to two days and only certain hours to water last year. So kinda did it irregardless of the forecast to still be able to do it within required guidelines.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

So the city actually has great Resources and I love it. To answer the question, yes and no… using sprinkler is a blanket no, doing it by hand is fine.

I actually just installed 2 rain barrels! Will need a pump to use with the soaker, but the City recommends (again great for resources I find) and I’ve seen comments here and elsewhere to not use on food.
So I’ll hand water flowers with them.

Haha that’s unfortunate, but moving to place with a decent yard/garden atleast!? I’m trying to post frequently without spamming or being annoying.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

We also have seedlings! Legumes in the picture, some arugula/rocket is starting as well, not all bad today it seems.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/a90815b7-fd89-42fa-be09-1696a302dbe2.jpeg

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

That’s what I’m hoping, it looked to mainly be the lower grass parts, wasn’t everywhere atleast, so it appears I have frost pockets though…

Wasn’t supposed to have frost, it was 4 last night, but the forecast doesn’t account for the valley it seems. I’ve got poly I could lay across them, but rolled the dice last night as there wasn’t any warnings for the towns around that I saw either.

I’ve tossed some ideas around on my head, something like that is super easy, I can also get some rebar and pound it into the ground with some pvc pipes as hoops and drap poly or a decent grow tarp over. This has the advantage of also doubling as critter guards too with a mesh covering.

I think the neighbours cat dug up a portion of the garden last night… so sounds like it’s gonna be a sooner than later fix ughhh…. Haha.

Thanks appreciate the advice though!

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

I asked the wife for a smart fancy one for my birthday, so another week, but you’re speaking my language growmie! Haha.

Yeah I would like one with HA integration for when I get around to figuring that out as well, so we will see how it goes next week I guess!

SchmidtGenetics ,

RIP

Are slugs good for anything? Edible even? Beneficial to the garden in any way?

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Thanks growmie, starting to regret it though, need to take the next week easy. Still a month out for my steroid shot, and when the painkillers wear off I’m feeling it now.

Good news is, garden is planted, so not as much of a rush. Some of the landscaping didn’t need to be done, but then I’m not dropping stuff on seedlings as well, so just better to be done it.

Just so much going on, hard to not bust your ass when you have time, even though you should still pace yourself.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Brown pressure treated wood. Cedar is nice but pricey, and there’s a few pressure treated color options now as well. The wood under the new boards is the same stuff, just a few years old now. Deck is the same stuff too.

There is some risk of chemical leakage from the wood potentially, but the stuff I was reading was about older more dangerous treatment chemicals.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Thanks! Appreciate it! I hate how short our spring is so it’s always a mad push.

This morning there was frost, and tomorrow is supposed to be above 20c, so the brassicas are at risk of bolting and they aren’t even supposed to be planted yet…. Makes stuff interesting for sure haha.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Oh man, I’m hoping I can get back to a work pace like that after my surgery, I miss being able to just work all day. This whole getting 2-3 hours of work in an 8 hour day just wears on the mind. The painkillers help, but than you forget to pace, but of a catch 22.

The other unfortunate thing, most of my other hobbies (well most of life really) requires hands, so it’s not like I can chill and play the games I want or read a book sometimes. But definitely trying too, it’ll be easier with a couple mandatory milestones crossed off it hope.

The Tylenol 3s help, but side effects and don’t exactly want to be on an addictive habit forming synthetic chemical either. Get enough flak for my medical cannabis use, don’t need to explain and justify more when it’s invisible disabilities.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Oh man, I wish that’s what I get, I tell my employees and all I get is yeah that’s getting old, it’s like you know I have carpal tunnel and other stuff… I guess whatever makes them feel better about their work output. So yeah I’m the other way, I should be off on disability and WCB, but WCB sees I can pay people to do the stuff I can’t and should be able to be self modified duties.

Disability would just drug me up and say good luck, so rocks and hard places, so my wife pays me to look after the house, home, yard can kids so we don’t need to pay for it. It actually saves the business money, but none of the employees would want to see it that way. Anyways that’s my rant and that’s my fault for buying the family business with the hope that my dad wouldn’t be an ass still. I was supposed to be doing carpentry with his client list, not taking over as the company laborer…

Man that’s young, but I’ve also been dealing with carpal tunnel since early in my apprenticeship right out of highschool. I’ve paid my dues doing shit jobs for a decade before buying the business with my hard earned money. Its frustrating having to account for their injuries and issues, but anytime I pace myself for a day so I can also do personal work I’m somehow not pulling my weight…

The pills are so I can have my yard/house and fun, and as you say pitter patter, I’m doing it for my family and myself. And I do still pull my weight at work when I need to, I’m not gonna let the business go under, that’s also partly why I can’t go on WCB or disability, still needed to do something every so often…they are also only until I get my steroid shot as that should keep the pain down for a few months. Originally was trying to avoid the shots and surgeries, but life…

Ive offered them a laborer and I’ll hire one if needed, but they seem to think it’s time/money from their pocket, since it would be less OT. They never see big picture unfortunately. But yeah, I’m not taking pills so I can go work and be taken advantage of not allowing me to spend time with my family. My wife operates the office, but if I go help her with that everyone else thinks I can go and help them on the jobs. So here we are.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

I provide room and board, I haven’t had to do that in a while. When I froze Sleepy for letting a predator into the garden, they seemed to have gotten the message.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Thanks growmie!

Oh man, that sucks, I wish I could grow outside, maybe one day in the future. Current place doesn’t satisfy requirements very well. Dont need to attract attention either.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Partly that, partly ergonomics, and one reason that no longer applies….

Here we have very clay heavy soil, so it’s easier to go up, and the more viable soil the more densely you can pack your garden beds. With raised beds you can avoid planting row style for more dense plantations since you aren’t walking between the plants compressing the soil.

Raised beds warm up earlier I’ve heard, haven’t tested that one yet, but supposedly you can plant earlier with them too.

Ergonomics should be self explanatory, less bending.

And I sadly had to put my blind dog away last week, so the taller beds were so she couldn’t waltz through them.

SchmidtGenetics ,

Can’t they recuse or abstain from voting though?

I've been landscaping instead of planting for some reason, but loving the results. ( lemmy.world )

Rock is called Alberta Rainbow Rock, probably under a different name elsewhere, shows its color when wet. I cut a strip of grass out so I could have the rock be about 4” deep where the grass is. Other than that left the old grass to compost underneath the rest.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/4921fdab-6915-4c62-be67-5da1b1875f24.jpeg

Also did the same around the other garden beds, it’s hosed down a little here for the color.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

They were some plant and plot 2’x4’ raised beds on Amazon.

One of the cheaper options, I would have went for wood, but damn it’s expensive and using a drill and hammer is terrible for my carpal tunnel right now.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Thanks! Tomorrow I am definitely planting, short grow season here, so shouldn’t put it off haha.

SchmidtGenetics ,

Were people maybe not shocked at the action or outburst of anger? Why are we assuming every reaction is because of the death of something “conscious”?

SchmidtGenetics ,

They are clearly green berries /s

SchmidtGenetics ,

Are those trellises for the plants to hang out on or critter guards?

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

A homie that grows stuff.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

I couldn’t tell you but absolutely should, I should set a camera up. Couple years ago we got voles, but the cucumbers were fine last year.

We are right by a natural preserve, so lots of wildlife, but the bunnies/rabbits (some domesticated became wild iirc) seem to be more prominent in other communities.

We’ve had deer in the front yard, but my backyard lilies have been fine, there’s a small gap under my gate that smaller stuff can get in, like rabbits, beavers and raccoons. All the trees in the community have little cages to stop beavers.

Floating Island Garden ( lemmy.world )

Our retention pond in our neighborhood has a lot of algae and problematic plant growth due to the surrounding farms and lawn runoff, so we're experimenting with a floating island to pull nutrients out before they can cause problems. This will also provide some interesting flowering plants, and more fish habitats....

SchmidtGenetics ,

For soil rejuvenation you mulch it back into the soil for compost I thought, you can’t do that if you’re using it for remediation to pull stuff out of the soil as you would be just be putting it right back in again.

SchmidtGenetics ,

Through discussion, which was extremely hard, you found out that it can be used for both, and there is potentially other options you can find out for your floating garden.

Why do you think I was offended by your post? I was trying to start a discussion and you apparently immediately thought I said you didn’t do any research.

SchmidtGenetics ,

Cannabis can be used for rejuvenation and remediation, it pulls out toxins and nutrients, but can also add nutrients. It can do anything, it’s just how it’s used, so yes it could maybe apply to your project.
