What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

  • Digital wallets (for things like cc, ID, coupons)
  • Map apps (like google maps)
  • Dating apps

I'd say the battery problem is now under control. The UI is still horrible though...

I'm using maliit myself but it hasn't received any updates for over a year now and there are some important features missing like a button to hide the keyboard. I really don't know any better alternatives tho

Is the desktop feature implemented? Something like multiple lanes you can switch back and forth.

Open Sustainable Technology

Earth's uniqueness in creating a stable environment for life in a completely hostile space is a miracle. Various life forms have taken billions of years to build up the natural resources humans depend on, such as a protective atmosphere, fertile soil, stable weather, and clean drinking water. As a movement to democratize...

You may want to take a look at ReFi (RegeneratkveFinance). It is a branch of blockchain technology that focuses on incentivising sustainable projects.

ReFi DAO has some great resources and even an own podcast.

It's more than a project that would need donations. ReFi is trying to integrate the environment and natural resources into the regular market. From an economic perspective this is a huge achievement.

Basically, you should choose your distro according to the available UIs (DesktopEnvironments) as well as the philosophy and back-end configuration of the distribution.

UI (desktop environments):

  • KDE (Windows like)
  • Gnome (MacOS like)
  • XFCE (very barebones, windows like)
  • Cinnamon (also windows like)
  • CosmicDE (comming soon, mix of KDE and Gnome)

Distros:

  • Fedora: very stable yet a very progressive philosophy (usually implement major changes first). Comes in Gnome, KDE and other variants (spins)
  • PopOS!: "Just works" distro, great for NVidia cards. Currently still using Gnome but will soon switch to CosmicDE.
  • ArcoLinux: If you want something beginner-friendly but want to be able to change everything later. Extremely flexible, comes in many flavours like Gnome, KDE, ...

That's how I did it. But be careful: It won't be pleasant at first and very time intensive!

What?! How?

Thaank you man! I will definitely check it out. I always love to be inspired by innovative projects like this one.

PropaGandalf OP ,
@PropaGandalf@lemmy.world avatar

Which ones? And where did you get the info?

PropaGandalf OP ,
@PropaGandalf@lemmy.world avatar

Solid is just the protocol. ActivityPods is the adaptation for the fediverse and thus should work with any service on this network. So yes, one account for all of them.

PropaGandalf OP ,
@PropaGandalf@lemmy.world avatar

Probably. But it shouldn't be much of a hurdle.

PropaGandalf OP ,
@PropaGandalf@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I'm following ActivityPods development for quite some time and although its slow the is some progress made. I wanted to use this post to inform people and generate a little enthusiasm for the project.

You can hardly kill a decentralized network. Even if we fall back to field 1. People who actively chose freedom will stay.

I don't see much of a difference to Goodreads. You will find most of the features you already use on bookwyr including book lists, reading goals and book info. It's up to you to decide if you want to sgare these info with everyone, just your friends or keep them for yourself. There are a lot of lists that are public too so don't worry about that.

PropaGandalf ,

And soon with ActivityPub integration? Pls?

These are all valid points which I partially forgot about and I'd love to write a follow up post reagrding this exact issue.

I think that most of your concerns are addressable on a technical level. Others will rely on the instance's community to guarantee an even safer experience. This will also benefit these instances as they can advertise with this trust level they recieve from the users.

PropaGandalf ,
@PropaGandalf@lemmy.world avatar

Sure but currently switching is a huge pain in the ass as you cant really take over your posts not to mention the migration of your communities which is currently impossible. So all the people saying somwthing like "just switch to another instance" tend to forget that this isn't really possible at the moment.

I like to have a history of my posts linked directly to my account. It's what I contributed to the community and I'd like it to be a part of my profile.
