The circular magazine Tommy machine gun used by Al Capone had a theoretical capacity of 600 rpm. The Clarence Thomas approved bumpstocks increase the capacity of semi-automatic weapons in private hands to a theoretical 800 rpm.

In 1934 the US deemed the Tommy gun too lethal for private ownership and passed the National Firearms Act. 90 years later, the MAGA SCOTUS has determined the higher 800 rpm fire-rate is irrelevant, and placed bullseyes not just on law enforcement but on school children across the US.

@NanoBookReview @pattykimura I am deeply uninformed, but can 8ask why the rate of fire bit would be a difficult thing to enforce?

@Iwillyeah@mastodon.ie avatar

@NanoBookReview @pattykimura I get that there are lots of variables, but the manufacturers must be advertising these weapons at their upper limit. You don't need to decide whether to restrict it for people who can achieve that max and not for others. There must be experts who can make decisions like 'in the right hands this is a 600 rate weapon'.

The laws also don't seem to have much to say about weapons that are fired by methods other than triggers, if I'm understanding you correctly?

@NanoBookReview @pattykimura cool. Thanks for explaining. I don't know anything about the topic. As a total outsider I really assumed rate of fire would be a something very sexy to advertise. What's the advantage of a bumpstock so? If it makes firing fast but practically indiscriminate, who does it suit other than Rambo wannabes trying to kill all around them?

I just saw my first live-and-in-person CyberTruck, and it did not disappoint.

It was the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever witnessed.

    @FourT4 @ElleGray someone with a suitably rough tongue, I hope, to give them a taste of their own medicine.

    The progressive US group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) has stressed that Israel, which has been besieging Gaza, is responsible for hunger in the territory.

    “Palestinians in Gaza are not starving, they are BEING starved. By the Israeli military,” JVP said in a social media post.

    @monsoon @appassionato @palestine It is intellectually dishonest to present two shitty options and tell people to choose. You sound exactly like the Putin apologists getting mad at Zelensky for Mariupol.

    @Iwillyeah@mastodon.ie avatar

    @monsoon @palestine everything we have seen about how this war is being conducted suggests that it precisely the purpose. Bibi says its to eliminate Hamas, but it's to eliminate Palestine. The two state solution must die, in his opinion, and he is perfectly open about that much, at least.

    The thin veneer of legality that Israel's actions were presented with has long flaked off in the eyes of all except those who will never recognise what is happening.

    @Iwillyeah@mastodon.ie avatar

    @monsoon @palestine and as to feasibility of an objective, that is not the only concern. You can't nuke a city to kill a general, even if killing the general is your objective. Ignoring the other rules around the legality of Israeli actions is precisely the kind of intellectual dishonesty your first set of options offered. If you can define the situation narrowly enough, you can perhaps the Israeli position doesn't look insane, but once you broaden it to include actual reality it all falls apart

    @Iwillyeah@mastodon.ie avatar

    @monsoon @palestine if you're not asking yourself how many dead, maimed and children is the right amount, you are not doing the necessary heavy lifting on your intellectual position. While we may not be able to agree on 'zero' as the correct answer, clearly 30,000 is not the correct fucking answer either. Proportionality was left behind a long time ago, so now the rational has to be some other bullshit. Enjoy yourself figuring out what the best way to support the IDF is next.

    @Iwillyeah@mastodon.ie avatar

    @monsoon @palestine excuse me, but with 30000 dead, mostly women and children, leaving at best 14000 male casualties, but 13,000 dead combatants, that means the IDF believes almost every man they have killed is an active member of Hamas. Does that seem even the slightest bit plausible to you? Be honest.

    @immibis @palestine @monsoon you're dad might need help. And in any case, he needs 6 million dead Germans for balance.

    @Iwillyeah@mastodon.ie avatar

    @monsoon @palestine the hamas ministry deny saying anything about dead militants. I'm not sure what I think of that.

    But let's go back to the IDFs numbers. The WHO accepts 30000 dead, and actually accept a figure of 70% women and children. The IDFs number suggests not only every man and also over 4000 women and children, or another 50% of the number of men, are also Hamas combatants.

    The idea that with 70% women and children you could have a 2:1 ratio of civilians to combatants insults reason.

    'Hamas does not provide any figures for its military fatalities. The Reuters news agency reported that an official had admitted 6,000 fighters had been killed, but Hamas denied this figure to the BBC'

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68387864

    'The toll of at least 30,035 killed, from Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, has previously been described as trustworthy by the World Health Organization's (WHO) regional emergency director Richard Brennan'

    So much for war not being maths. Good night.

    @monsoon @palestine not one guy, the WHO accepts their figures, as does the UN, so don't be obtuse. It makes you look desperate.
