while the USA depends on keeping some people so poor and their prospects so bleak that joining the military starts to look like a relatively good option.

Yes, that and also more than half of our military personnel are not enlisted soldiers, they are hired contractors. Half of those contractors are not US citizens, but "host country nationals" or "third country nationals." The latter are migrant workers who suffer the worst working conditions with no recourse and very low pay. If the US did not depend so heavily on contractors, conscription would be necessary and people would get upset and start to question why we need so much military activity in the first place.

You're not posting memes. You're posting links to a blogspot. It's not the same thing. And you're cross posting them to so many communities. Please stop.

It was pretty tough working at a bakery stall at farmers markets when people were just starting to jump on the gluten free train. I'd have folks come up to me and start screaming at me that they needed spelt bread because of their celiac disease, and I was a heartless bitch for not having any. Explaining that spelt actually has more gluten than regular wheat was not a good idea, nor was explaining that to be safe for a person with celiac disease, bread would need to be 1) free of gluten containing grains, not just wheat and 2) baked in a facility where the air is not thick with wheat flour dust, depositing itself on every surface. "Give me my special bread! IT MAKES ME FEEL SPECIAL!!!"

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Well, if that's not terrifying, I don't know what is.

I_Fart_Glitter ,

There are definitely areas of California where going less than 10 miles over the speed limit will put you well under the flow of traffic in every lane. If you're not going 80 on 80, you're gonna have a bad time.

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Shhhh.... they're raging against the machine. Adults just don't get them, man!

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Is this not an illustration? He apparently gained 20 pounds of muscle for the role, but I don't think he actually developed prehensile rectus abdominis muscles as depicted above.

He is pretty ripped though.

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Fun fact: Late in pregnancy they actually do just fucking unzip right there on many women.

No spoilers please, but does Old Man’s War get better?

I’ve been really enjoying John Scalzi’s catalog- Started with Starter Villain (delightful!), The Kaiju Preservation Society (Sweet..), Lock In + Head On (fun who-done-its), The Android’s Dream (clever, enjoyable read), Agent to the Stars (funny, creative, pretty good)....

I_Fart_Glitter OP ,

So much so that it turned me from not knowing him at all to getting what ever he writes without question or even reading the synopsis

I felt this way about Starter Villain! I'm curious how you felt about that one, given how different it is from Old Man's War.

I_Fart_Glitter OP ,

Thank you!! I just ordered Fuzzy Nation and We Are Legion (We Are Bob).

I_Fart_Glitter OP ,

That tracks. As someone who takes many steps every day to stave off crushing depression, I try to keep to more fanciful/hopeful fare for my leisure reading. Thanks for your input!

I_Fart_Glitter OP ,

I really like it so far! Very clever idea for the story line. I appreciate that we are made aware of violence that advances the plot without being given a graphic description of every injury.

Thanks for the rec! I’ll keep you posted!

I_Fart_Glitter ,

That looks properly terrifying.

The May 1799 test, above, occurred when a party of investors was aboard the vessel and they nearly suffocated before they could be freed. Work on the second lock was suspended

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Neat! I didn't know about it changing when you press on your eyeballs- they really slow down quite a bit! It makes me wonder if there is a name for the dancing green patterns that show up when you squinch your eyes shut really tight.

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Neat! Thank you! That swirly checkerboard thing they show is exactly what I see, but in green.

Fast walking home from school to catch Total Request Live on MTv at 3:30, hoping your favorite song didn't drop in the ranking today because that means it will play earlier and you will not get to hear it today (and that song is Objects in the Rear View Mirror by Meatloaf).

I_Fart_Glitter ,

I'm picturing you trying to type this with a green olive stuck on the tip of each of your fingers.

You know we have an electoral college.. ya?

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Third party voting is a piss poor substitute for voting reform. Your vote is counted but it does not count for shit. Your electoral college delegates' votes are the only ones that count toward who is elected.

Buffalo Exchange and similar stores like that are between thrift stores and consignment stores, they purchase their products either from customers for store credit or cherry pick at real thrift stores then mark it up to sell at the trendy store. Everything there has to meet a specific aesthetic.

I've been to a few low budget weddings that did this. It was awesome. No $10K dinner bill for the newly weds, just a shit ton of homemade desserts.

This is Jasper, she is our chief of security. ( lemmy.world )

Jasper (so named for her jasperite like patterning, my daughter likes minerals) adopted our family as a skinny little street cat. My daughter begged us for a cat for months and she just kinda showed up which was perfect. Shes got what we think are siblings that come by but shes the runt of the litter as she has remained small...

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Your post reminds me of the book Starter Villain by John Scalzi. If you enjoy light scifi and cats, it might be worth a read.

I_Fart_Glitter ,

Yeah, we blew it all on silly shit like ratcheted up rent and groceries. So silly..

I_Fart_Glitter ,

“as a rule, men are subhuman scum more dangerous to me than wild carnivorous animals”

Lol. No one said that. But the fact that you hear that when women say they feel threatened is very telling of who you are as a person. I hope your wife finds freedom eventually.

I_Fart_Glitter ,

It's clear you are choosing not to understand the difference between what you said and what the question said. I can't save you from your willful ignorance.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

A straw man fallacy (sometimes written as strawman) is the informal fallacy of refuting an argument different from the one actually under discussion, while not recognizing or acknowledging the distinction. One who engages in this fallacy is said to be "attacking a straw man".

The typical straw man argument creates the illusion of having refuted or defeated an opponent's proposition through the covert replacement of it with a different proposition (i.e., "stand up a straw man") and the subsequent refutation of that false argument ("knock down a straw man") instead of the opponent's proposition. Straw man arguments have been used throughout history in polemical debate, particularly regarding highly charged emotional subjects.

Yeah.. it was a bit tongue in cheek, the one I posted right before it is a hungry ladybug patrolling the same flower patch.

You’re probably right? I say that based on being half awake through the movie Adaptation where it was discussed in a conversation between Meryl Streep and Nicolas Cage.

Looks like a tongue though 🤷‍♀️
