The sad thing is that this is a really good local school. It could have handled things better, but the level of torch-and-pitchforking going on is disturbing

Convicted murderer, filesystem creator writes of regrets to Linux list ( arstechnica.com )

This made me so weirdly sad. I remember this guy; he was well known for being technically skilled but a huge pain in the ass for everyone to work with, and it's weird to see how resigned he is now to his prison life....

That’s really heartwarming. Thanks for sharing.

A splendid chap, but I happen to think Sadiq is doing a decent job. The Count can probably find a better target

You don’t have to lose your dogs. You just have to keep them muzzled in public. And lose their testicles, I guess

Yeh. I don’t see the point in that at all, I can’t see how it would practically help his political campaign

You don’t think that time travel stories can’t be intrinsically interesting? I find that … surprising

The theatrical ending fereks much more in keeping with the themes in the short story “The Story of Your Life”

It’s not a zero-sum game and we are in a climate emergency.

As I type this, wind is only making up 13% of grid demand, down from well over 50% last week - which means that gas generation is sitting at over 62% http://gridwatch.templar.co.uk/

Nuclear is a reasonable lower carbon way of serving base-load when wind/solar aren’t delivering . I just wish, as with all things climate-related, we had committed to this 30 years ago.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

And once again - it's not a zero-game and we are in a climate emergency. Nuclear is a useful adjunct to renewables and some people need to let go of their 1970s nuclear doomerism.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

But we don’t, there is zero benefit to building nuclear today over renewables.

What are your practical proposals for generating 25 Gigawatts over a sustained period on a day like today when there is not much wind and negligable solar generation?

I found the first book really quite disappointing. Though I wonder if it had something to do with the translation.

Never made it to book 2 The trailer looks pretty interesting though.

Fujitsu's HorizonIT - How to remedy an injustice ignored by politicians: make a good television series ( english.elpais.com )

Mr Bates vs the Post Office, whose first episode aired on January 1 on ITV, unleashed the anger and sadness of 3.9 million viewers . The prestigious British actor Toby Jones (star of films such as Capote and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) gave a face and voice to the battle that Alan Bates waged against the UK government for two...

The sad thing is that that the BBC - particularly BBC Radio - has been reporting on this in depth for years, as has Private Eye, Computer Weekly etc.

Attacks on machine learning models ( rnikhil.com )

With all the hype surrounding machine learning whether its with self driving cars or LLMs, there is a big elephant in the room which not a lot of people are talking about. Its not the danger of ChatGPT taking your jobs or deepfakes or the singularity. Its instead about how neural networks can be attacked. This blog post attempts...

So the ONS is - in my opinion - pretty awesome. I think it's unlikely that they will be caving to political pressure. From what I can tell, they are basically saying the quality of the data sucks - they tried collecting it for 5 years and it didn't really work.

Royal family condemns Meghan Markle’s failure to stop Prince Andrew visiting Epstein’s island ( chaser.com.au )

King Charles has spoken out following the release of court documents that confirmed Prince Andrew went to sex-trafficker Jeffery Epstein’s private island, with the King strongly condemning Meghan Markle for not stopping Prince Andrew from visiting the island....

But what should they specifically do in this case to improve the situation - got any actual suggestions?

Hang on - what exactly did they lie about?

How do they stack up for data privavcy? Are they continously connected to the cloud?

No, and I don’t want to be particularly sinophobic. But I’m generally very concerned about manufacturers’ post-sales controls over cars anyway.

The point of strikes is to get employers to meet the demands of the workers

Carl Sagan testifying before Congress in 1985 on climate change ( www.youtube.com )

Aside for its length, it's amazing to me how much Sagan models the archetypal scientist warning from a disaster movie. At the end, he essentially -- but in very calm terms -- warns the US congress that for the next generation to avert catastrophe, we will need to find a global consciousness that supersedes our petty tribal...

And as a reminder that climate change shouldn't have become a party political issue, here's Margaret Thatcher's address to the UN General Assembly in 1989, which she dedicated to climate change and the need for concerted international interventions by government to halt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnAzoDtwCBg

Several reasons.

  1. The philosophical. This is something that is unique and took billions of years to evolve to its present state. There’s nothing else like it in the universe.
  2. The practical. It plays a unique part in the ecological web of life. In many cases organisms are reliant on other organism for dispersal, reproduction etc. The removal of a species is like pulling a Jenga block from the ecosystem.

Earth’s eco system is awesome. The chances of any species existing in its current for is minuscule. We should mourn their passing.
