With 13 Oscar nominations, all signs point to as the star of the 96th . But a historian – whose research has revolved around the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing – explains why they are disappointed by the award-winning film.

“Yet again, the dominant narrative of the bombs chugs along,” writes Naoko Wake of Michigan State University. And the victims aren’t shown.

@TheConversationUS @histodons The movie whatever its merits or otherwise is not about the bomb or its deployment. It is about Oppenheimer as the title suggests to the discerning.

“$1 Billion Donation Will Provide Free Tuition at a Bronx Medical School

Dr. Ruth Gottesman, a longtime professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is making free tuition available to all students going forward.”

    Healthcarer ,

@GottaLaff Let's hope they don't train yet more of the currently obsolete model of physician. AI is coming and we need new types of clinician who will be comfortable being guided by it and who will provide better care as a consequence.

    Healthcarer ,

@GottaLaff You won't want to consult the doctors they produce. Medical schools have walked away from the traditional albeit now obsolete model yet have not embraced it's replacement, AI assisted practice. The current medical graduate is unfit having neither the traditional depth of knowledge nor the tools to access modern data. Lose lose in fact.

It's surprising, but fantastic, to see a mainstream media outlet in 2024 recommending wearing N95 masks, and guiding consumers on where to purchase them.

This is the kind of content we need to normalize the wearing of masks in the long-term!

I can't stress enough how downplaying COVID has emboldened the far right.

When you tell people "you do you" or say that schools don't need public health protections, you shift the Overton window, making it easier for anti-vaxxers to say it's fine to spread measles.

    Healthcarer ,

@luckytran Many anti-vaxxers will of course be fully vaccinated. Obviously.

In refusing to pressure Israel into a ceasefire while continuing to launch strikes on Yemen, Biden has shown utter contempt for all Arabs and Muslims, including his own Arab and Muslim American citizens who say they won’t vote for him over Gaza.

@mondoweiss @palestine @israel Trump will be delighted at confirmation of his visceral certainty that such people are intrinsically undemocratic, authoritarian and raw material for his impending victory. Go Hamas. Deliver the vote.

    He makes a good point.

Mitt Romney: “I will not be voting for former President Trump. I must admit that I find sexual assault to be a line I will not cross in the people I select to be my president.”

    Healthcarer ,

@GottaLaff Indeed. But that seems to be the only one?

It’s time for all of us who care about human rights to demand a ceasefire in Gaza. Now. https://youtu.be/J8cBTLGAasM?feature=shared

    Healthcarer ,

@rbreich Too late. The genie is out of the bottle. Israel knows it was played and lost. It sees the future and will do anything to try to postpone its inevitable fate. Which can only hasten it. It is over. Palestine will be restored.

    Healthcarer ,

@rbreich Too little too late. We armed them and protected them for long enough recognising their capabilities. They have fallen to a more extreme clever enemy who knowingly sacrificed many if it's people to gain the upper hand in the court if world opinion. Hamas has won and Israel is finished. And probably knows it.

    Healthcarer ,

@rbreich A ceasefire now will not save Israel. It is finished.

    Healthcarer ,

@rbreich A bit late with that. Should have said that when Hamas was at its furthest advance. Now it has won a much bigger victory. Israel is finished. By its own hand.

    Healthcarer ,

@rbreich Too little too late. Squeamish liberals are out of their league here.

Israeli forces disguised as hospital workers and civilians entered Jenin’s Ibn Sina Hospital and assassinated three Palestinians as they slept. The brazen killing marks an unprecedented escalation in Israel’s war on Palestinians in the West Bank.

    @palestine @israel

    Healthcarer ,

@mondoweiss @palestine @israel Hamas knew full well that such would happen and Gaza would be destroyed. The plan however as intended has succeeded in garnering global support for the Palestinians and Israel is doomed. Palestine will be restored free and independent just like Lebanon.
    Or Syria.

Natalie Cline(R) Utah state school board member needs to step down today. And then she should probably face a lawsuit from the teen's family.

Natalie posted a photo of a teenaged basketball player claiming that she was trans. The teen has needed police protection. The teen has been subject to disgusting online bullying.

The teen isn't trans. Not that this would be any less heinous if she were trans. When you buy into "correct" and "incorrect" women. You invite all women to be judged.

The fact that the former president could barely win New Hampshire tonight speaks to the weakness of his candidacy. I have thoughts.

    https://robertreich.substack.com/p/trumps-poor-showing-in-new-hampshire

    Healthcarer ,

@rbreich It would be wrong to see his opponent in the primary as somehow a decent person and preferable. She was a Southern Republican governor. How did that come about?
