Over 100 killed and 700 injured by IDF at humanitarian aid delivery point.

Try convincing me this isn’t systematic, cynical, planned GENOCIDE.

How is this being allowed to happen?

Israel shows itself to be dead behind the eyes. Never again will it be able to walk with head held high. A pariah state. So dreadful and sad.

@perimeter multiple evening news sources unsurprisingly report that what happened is contested.

Irrespective, as occupying power, IDF have responsibility for civil & aid security under international law. Clearly something has gone badly wrong & IMO that’s on IDF however many bullets were fired.

Capitalism is killing nature en masse.

Humans are like ‘a virus with legs’.

‘Quite radical’: the feeling of exhaustion is key to tackling climate change, says author https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/feb/28/quite-radical-the-feeling-of-exhaustion-is-key-to-tackling-climate-change-says-author-ajay-singh-chaudhary?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

This looks interesting @breadandcircuses

I can quite readily subscribe to his narrative and will read with interest.

Keir Starmer’s ‘bombproof’ manifesto shows Labour is ready for an election https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/feb/09/labour-bombproof-manifesto-hits-first-deadline-with-green-spending-cuts?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

For ‘bombproof’ read magnolia blancmange. A manifesto designed to alarm nobody and excite even fewer, to woo floating voters and disheartened Tories in key marginals. A manifesto for the few.

Go on, Sir Kier, please please please prove me wrong.

but I wanna bold alternative offer, not a diluted Tory one.

Why is Business As Usual allowed to go on? Why do governments continue to subsidize the fossil fuel industry and issue even more drilling permits when it seems obvious to most of us that this is the wrong course?

Why? Because governments don’t listen to people like you and me.

Instead, they listen to their “seasoned” advisors, ministers and cabinet members formerly employed by oil and gas companies. They listen to lobbyists for the fossil fuel industry, people who used to work beside them in government, part of that revolving door. And they listen to “experts” from the Chicago school of economics who promise them that we can do both: we can slowly reduce some harmful emissions AND keep our economies growing. It’s a win-win!

But it’s a devastating loss for Earth’s biosphere, for our climate and for our natural environment.

@breadandcircuses what models for national and social development other than western O&G exploitative colonialism have been shown to ‘work’ economically?

In their absence (or ignorance) advisors will always fall back on experience (the past) to frame their advised future.

This model is no longer fit for purpose but I’ve yet to see a compelling & powerful movement advocating the kinda change that deals with climate predictions.

Lack of imagination or vested interests?

Today, there are around 1.31 billion personal vehicles (cars, trucks, and SUVs) in the world. 🚙 Of those, only about 2% are hybrid or electric. The other 98% are ICE vehicles burning gasoline/petrol.

By 2050, it’s estimated we’ll have about 2.21 billion vehicles in the world. That’s a HUGE number, almost 70% greater than today.

But how many of those will be electric? Instead of only 2%, it’s expected they will increase to around 31% of the total.

That sounds great! 😃 More EVs is a good thing, right?

Well, if 31% are EVs in 2050, that means the other 69% will still be ICE vehicles burning gas/petrol. So the number of cars and trucks and SUVs burning fossil fuels will go UP from 1.28 billion now to about 1.52 billion by 2050.

That’s… not so good. 😠

We don’t need more cars, more traffic, more congestion, more pollution, more road damage, and more CO2 emissions.

What we need is:

❇️ More bicycles
❇️ More electric bikes
❇️ More pedestrians
❇️ More mass transit
❇️ More light rail

NOT MORE CARS!!

EU fossil fuel CO2 emissions hit 60-year low https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/24/eu-fossil-fuel-co2-emissions-hit-60-year-low?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Yeah but no but…

Let’s celebrate this at face value.

But let’s not lose sight of the fact that much of what EU consumes is now imported; ie the CO2 emissions have been outsourced.

Add back in the full CO2e of all imports and what does that tell us about the real emissions of a ‘growing economy’. I guess the carbon border adjustment tax will soon reveal all.

Gaza will be the grave of the western led world order. I sense the author may well be right.
