And then they will pretend to care about concentration camps for migrants, anti-LGBT laws, women’s rights, police brutality, Palestinians,

Are you seriously trying to claim Democrats don't care about those things? What utter nonsense.

Taxes are not direct payments and taxes would be collected regardless of the existence of libraries.

No right wing wave in Finland as Left Alliance take record result in EU elections ( yle.fi )

Finland's results in the European election bucked a continent-wide trend of rising support for parties on the outer fringe of right-wing politics, with the Left Alliance and the National Coalition winning big at the expense of the nationalist Finns Party....

I hope you know Finnish already or are really good with languages because it's completely unrecognizable to people who speak most other European languages. My dad went to Helsinki in the 90s and said the only signs he could recognize were ones which had international logos like McDonald's.

This is (according to a search) "I love you" in Finnish: minä rakastan sinua.

But yes, it sounds like a very nice place to live.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I would say that entirely depends on which celebrities get on board.

Someone like, for example, Robert Downey, Jr.? Definitely a "fellow kids" thing. But if they get someone like Taylor Swift?

FlyingSquid ,

Maybe you didn't read the article to the end?

Almost a third of people aged 18 to 29 said they were regularly getting their news from TikTok, according to Pew Research, as well as upticks on YouTube, Instagram and Twitch.

Sounds like TikTok is the exact right place to reach young voters to me.

Looks to me like they knew exactly what to do with that student.

Actual example:

Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it’s true! — but when you're a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible.

I don't see a problem with the title. That's literally what happened. It makes no judgments.

FlyingSquid Mod ,

Because "dozens" is less than "scores?"

12 < 20.

What would be better?

FlyingSquid Mod ,

I wasn't defending anything. I literally asked what would be better.

Apparently asking what would be better was bad.

Mm! Transglutaminase! It's the glue that holds your multi-cow steak together while you grill it!

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t let terrorists live in your home. Leave if you have to.

I'm sure that would have been very easy for the well over 10,000 children who have been killed. Especially the babies.

I have said this multiple times and I will continue to say it- if you have to kill thousands of children in the name of protecting your nation, maybe your nation isn't worth protecting.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Non-ironically, maybe they aren't worth protecting either.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Please stop flagging this thread as misinformation. Whether or not you believe that the Al Jazeera journalist had any responsibility here, the article is about them denying it.

That is not misinformation. They do deny it.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Because Al Jazeera denies it. That is a fact. If you're saying that the Times is claiming Al Jazeera denies a rumor the Times started themselves, it does not make it any less factual that Al Jazeera denies it. And the article is about Al Jazeera denying it.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The Axis Powers that were also killing lots of children and thus not worth protecting?

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I'm not sure what that has to do with my point.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Again, doesn't change what I said- if you have to kill thousands of children based on the claim that you're protecting your nation- something the Axis powers themselves did- then maybe your nation isn't worth protecting.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

A viable alternative would be a one-world government, but that is the worst thing imaginable to a large number of people.

As a Star Trek fan, I look forward to it.

FWIW:

Bias Rating: LEFT-CENTER

Factual Reporting: HIGH

Country: Israel

MBFC’s Country Freedom Rank: MODERATE FREEDOM

Media Type: Website

Traffic/Popularity: High Traffic

MBFC Credibility Rating: HIGH CREDIBILITY

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/ynetnews/

Not sure how to rate a left-center Israeli source in this situation, but 'high credibility' does suggest that they do a decent job overall.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I really do not know how else to check this site's credibility. "They're Israeli" is not enough of an argument for me to say this is not a credible source. How can its credibility be rated?

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Okay, so how do we judge this story's validity? I do know Al Jazeera is denying it.

FlyingSquid Mod ,

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry... you're saying because they say IDF instead of Israeli Government, this article is ridiculously biased and can't be trusted?

Because I see people here using IDF and Israel interchangeably all the time when discussing this war.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don't mean this in any sort of insulting way, but I think you've put far more analysis into this than the person who was writing on a deadline did into writing it.

Did the author have a bias? Quite possibly. But I think your implication that these were conscious choices is going a bit too far.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

All war harms people and the ecosystem. The bigger issue with Israel's white phosphorous attacks is that they're war crimes.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Are you saying that because Western countries have done bad things it means that Russia isn't doing a bad thing when it does it too?

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You do know that South Korea and Japan want those bases there, right? They don't have to allow them. They are a huge boon to the local economies.

They may be there because of a war, but they remain there because the people in those sovereign nations want them there.

You know what military the sovereign nation of Ukraine doesn't want on its soil? The Russian military.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I would advise you not to violate our civility rule again.

Now-

Can you show any evidence whatsoever that the governments of South Korea and Japan are being forced to keep American military bases there?

Can you show any evidence whatsoever that their presence has been a net negative on either nation?

Can you show any evidence that the nation of Ukraine does want Russia's military on its soil?

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Well it was a stupid question:

Just out of curiosity, when did westerners started to have a problem with invading other countries?

I've always had a problem with invading other countries. Why do you think I don't? I was working in a protest camp against the 1991 Iraq War when I was in middle school. I marched against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in massive antiwar marches in Los Angeles. I have been protesting against Israel's invasion of Gaza since it began.

I have the same problem with Russia invading Ukraine as I did with the U.S. invading Iraq.

Any other stupid questions?

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And that would be the second violation after a warning. Time for a break.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Saying a question is stupid is not uncivil. Saying a person is stupid is uncivil.

And asking why all Westerners are okay with invasions except when Russia does it is a stupid question because it's obviously not true based on anyone who has paid attention to protests in Western countries when those countries invade other countries.

And if you really have an issue with that, you are free to take it up with lemmy.world admins.

No, I am not interested in the fight you are trying to pick with me.

You know what to do if you have an issue with my moderation.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I like how you think just providing those search results prove something is a "well-known fact" rather than just something people believe.

Is the problem that you don't understand the concept of evidence?

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

a simple Google search gives multiples articles confirming it.

Then you can easily pick one and show me the evidence.

Remember, this is your claim:

It’s a well known fact that western universities have a left-leaning bias. And by extension, a pro-Hamas and/or pro-Palestine bias.

So, pick the site which shows evidence for this claim. Quote the evidence.

You haven't been able to do so thus far.

Also, it is a lie that I suggested a Google search was my criterion. Not one thing I said even implies it.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

To the "no shit" and "this is obvious" people, agreed. However, "this is obvious, just look" is nowhere near as good an argument as one with actual data. Especially when looked at in the future with a historical lens.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. With two seconds of Googling, I can show you evidence.

Such as this:

A planet is round because of gravity. A planet's gravity pulls equally from all sides. Gravity pulls from the center to the edges like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. This makes the overall shape of a planet a sphere, which is a three-dimensional circle.

https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/planets-round/en/

You have shown me no evidence whatsoever. At this point, it's clear it was just a lie.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Nope. All that proves is that there are more left-wing people on university campuses. This was your claim:

It’s a well known fact that western universities have a left-leaning bias. And by extension, a pro-Hamas and/or pro-Palestine bias.

You said the universities, which indicates what is taught, not the people in those universities and what they believe.

By the way, since I didn't say it before, your implication that "Palestinian" and "Hamas" are synonymous is bigoted and if I see you say it again in this community, you will be taking a break for violating the rules.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That's utter nonsense. Communes predate capitalism by thousands of years. The first known settled town was a commune. There are no detectable hierarchies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%87atalh%C3%B6y%C3%BCk#Economy

Currency wouldn't even exist for a good 5000 years after Çatalhöyük.

As far as "ultimately" failing, it lasted at least 900 years, which much is longer than most countries around today have been in existence.

Nice try though.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is what you said:

Even communes ultimately fail because hierarchies form within the commune, and the people at the bottom get tired of doing all the work and leave. That’s even when they aren’t deciding the laws and don’t have to worry about national defense. When communists are deciding the laws and have control over national defense, then oh yeah… there’s gonna be a hierarchy.

Çatalhöyük was a commune. There were no hierarchies, no division of labor between class or gender. It lasted 900 years. It predated capitalism by millennia.

I'm not sure why you don't understand why that proves you wrong.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That says nothing about visa overstays. Or anything about visas at all.

But the fact that you use the term "fake news" really tells me all I need to know here.

FlyingSquid Mod ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And yet you have not shown it to be untrue.

But please do continue with your right-wing rhetoric.
