Independently on US laws, It's funny how people in the technosphere still believe that Mozilla are the good guys.

Microsoft Account to local account conversion guide erased from official Windows 11 guide — instructions redacted earlier this week ( www.tomshardware.com )

Microsoft has been pushing hard for its users to sign into Windows with a Microsoft Account. The newest Windows 11 installer removed the easy bypass to the requirement that you make an account or login with your existing account. If you didn't install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account and now want to stop sending the...

Was about to say the same for Spain. Fuck you, tourists. Stay at home.

Engywuck ,

Nope. LO Impress doesn't support inline equations, something quite annoying if you're going to prepare slides for scientific stuff.

Engywuck ,

It reminds me of some Lovecraft tale I read decades ago. Sweet.

Engywuck ,

Was about to suggest Zoho myself. I have a couple of personal domain email hosted there and they've been very reliable until now

Engywuck ,

It happens on Lemmy, as well. I have seen posts removed according to a "rule x", where "rule x" when the post didn't go anywhere near "rule x". I just left the community, even if those posts weren't mine.

Engywuck ,

I won’t recommend the player since I would be downvoted to hell

You shouldn't care about downvotes.

Firefox failing several privacy tests out-of-the-box, according to Brave article ( lemmy.world )

I understand firefox is free software and greatly customisable. I think forks like LibreWolf are fantastic. But I believe the FOSS community needs to be more critical of mozilla. They haven't been the sharpest tool in the drawer for a while......

Engywuck , (edited )

It's well know that FF defaults aren't exactly the best for privacy.

Engywuck ,

It's not chinese. Like, at all. You may be talking about Opera.

OTOH, Brave is FOSS: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser

Please, don't spread FUD and don't parrot what people say without even a bit of research.

It's funny how corporate equates lack of growth with losses. Bastards.

    Engywuck ,

I have already set up a proxy on my foreign VPS. National Court can suck my duck.

    Engywuck ,

AFAIK, connecting to a random port on your own server isn't a crime. Yet.

    Engywuck ,

Also postdocs... At this poit I'm getting so pissed off by the lack of stability that I'm really tempted to quit and look for a less underrated job.

    Engywuck ,

Was on Namesilo. No complaints, save for the slow website. Changed to porkburn because it was a bit cheaper.

    Engywuck ,

I have a .de domain with them. No personal info are shown on whois info.

    Engywuck ,

    Abstract+conclusions is the sweet spot.

This makes me think that given some particular article, the only people that would ever read it in its entirety are its authors and (maybe) a couple reviewers.

    Engywuck ,

Interesting... What would people shitting on other browsers for offering OPT-IN ads do now?

Oh, wait. Mozilla can do no wrong /s

    Nothing to see here.

    How responsive is your Nextcloud?

My Nextcloud has always been sluggish — navigating and interacting isn't snappy/responsive, changing between apps is very slow, loading tasks is horrible, etc. I'm curious what the experience is like for other people. I'd also be curious to know how you have your Nextcloud set up (install method, server hardware, any other...

MIne is on a RPi4 4 GB as well (the AIO container) with two SSD and the performance of the frontend are meh... But I seldom use the web part anyway and mainly rely on the desktop client/android App, which work just fine.

    Engywuck ,

Is that the granpda? Is him actually 85? Jeez, he looks at least 30 yeras younger.

    Engywuck ,

Hopefully. I'll start collecting rocks ASAP.

    Engywuck ,

(S)he's actually laughing at you, make no mistakes.

    Engywuck ,

As an ex can-opener, I can only say LOL (both cats crossed the bridge a couple of years ago).

    Engywuck , (edited )

The Wheel of Time (the whole saga). Going for the second book right now.

    Engywuck ,

Yeah. BTW, maybe I'm wrong but I can perceive a lot of LOTR influences in the first two books.

    Engywuck ,

Now, download the paper and read the "Materials and Methods" section, if you dare.

    Engywuck ,

Arch. Minimal, fast, rolling and it doesn't break. Plus, the AUR and the Wiki are unvaluable.

Had been on: RedHat (199something), Mandrake, Slackware, Ubuntu and Debian before.

    Engywuck ,

Dunno, during 8ish years I have only hada couple of minimal problems due to updates (and the solution was promptly available on Arch homepage). Can't speak for other, though.

    Engywuck ,

it’s cringe but equaly cringy is posting it to here and the comments pretending you couldn’t find a dozen similar examples on lemmy lol, like the demographic is not that different.

    This.

    Engywuck ,

Can anyone help a poor physicist understand this very chemical meme? 😅

    Engywuck ,

    Cool. Thanks!

    Engywuck ,

Yeah... And wait until they start spamming you you to review papers for them, or to participate in their Special Issues, or to be a Guest Editor....
Such a shitty publisher, if you ask me.

    Engywuck ,

You are (somewhat) right... Publish or Perish is unfortunately true. Still, if I can avoid them in the future, I will. They look borderline predatory to me.

    Engywuck ,

You don't. Just pick something else. Reading should be pleasant, not a torture.

    Engywuck , (edited )

In my humble opinion, unless you use your account only to receive emails but also to send them, your provider has limited effect on your privacy. That's why I personally don't have a use for Tuta, Proton and other similar, super private services (mind you, I'm not saying they aren't good). That said, I've been a happy customer of mailbox.org for quite a few years and I found them reliable and cheap (if you don't need a custom domain). Same for Posteo, I guess. At the moment, I'm a paying customer for Zoho email, with quite a few custom domains abd I'm fairly happy. They have a free tier as well and their privacy policy looks good to me.
