I understand the alternate reality about the last election. But I don't understand the alternate reality about COVID. That's the most wild thing about it.

Is it that COVID isn't really a deadly infectious disease?
Or was it made in a lab?
Or is it deadly, but the vaccine isn't real?
Or did the vaccine cause the disease?
Or is the vaccine ... mind control? IDK?

There isn't really a cohesive story so it ought to be very awkward for any politician to claim to be a champion of this theory.

@futurebird Republicans voters could have voted for Johnson/Weld if they wanted libertarian policies (former Republican governors running as Libertarian in 2016). Instead, they voted for Trump - the guy who was irrationally afraid of Ebola and wanted to shut out doctors who got sick while treating people during the west Africa outbreak.

Oh COVID, you little murderous twerp, will I ever use a public water fountain again? I think I won’t! That sweet copper flavored water is forever trapped in those less heatstroke inducing summers of the past.

@futurebird I was just thinking about the neglected drinking fountains in my town and thought that COVID may be a factor. Is there anything that would make you comfortable with drinking fountains? Better maintenance (good pressure; no clogged drains)? What about a downward facing spout that lets you fill a cup or bottle?

If it helps, copper appears to have antiviral properties...

Video of popsicle sticks interwoven and when a firework is lit, a long line of them come apart like dominoes. Scratches that OCD itch

@flexghost Do you know of any program to support communities that are under-represented on Mastodon, particularly those in the 'global South'?

@pluralistic I recently came across street parking that was app-only. It really bugged me. I need to write to my city council about that.

"The New York Times reports that Trump is planning to 'build huge camps to detain people,' and 'to get around any refusal by Congress to appropriate the necessary funds, Mr. Trump would redirect money in the military budget.’ "

"How many people? ‘Millions’ writes the Times. And not just immigrants: Trump is planning to send his enemies to them, too.”

@futurebird @StillIRise1963 He made it abundantly clear when he promoted the lie that Kamala Harris and Nikki Haley are not natural born US citizens. If they are not natural born citizens, then they are not citizens (since they have not been naturalized), and neither are many other Americans. This clearly signaled Trump's desire to revoke citizenship from many thousands of Americans.

DecaturNature ,
@DecaturNature@theatl.social avatar

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird @StillIRise1963 True. His attacks on Harris and Haley need to be viewed in light of his broader attacks on birthright citizenship, and his mass-deportation plan. The attack on Harris and Haley show that he wants to apply this retroactively (and arbitrarily), and these deportations will be completely lawless if he gets his way.

The election isn't the last line of defense, but it's the strongest line. If people can't be bothered to make the small effort to stop it at the election, it's going to be much harder to stop it afterwards. I want to scream when people assert that we don't need to bother with the election because "institutions" will prevent horrible things from happening -- as if we can rely on a small number of people to put their careers and even their lives on the line, when the rest of us couldn't even be bothered to vote.

Am I the only one who finds the republicans in the house quitting a little ... ominous?

What is about to go down that the rats are fleeing the ship?

(with apologies to actual rats)

DecaturNature ,
@DecaturNature@theatl.social avatar

@futurebird It may show that they don't want to be involved with whatever the Republicans are going to do. But I don't think it suggests that they have any inside information. The Republicans have been clear about their intentions to complete what Trump's supporters attempted on Jan 6 when they attacked Congress. Any half-sensible person would look at their infighting and lack of discipline and realize that these losers are not the people you want next to you in the trenches.

Last night our cable internet box randomly died. It’s totally fried and must be replaced. This happened just as my husband got home from work, waking me up to tell me the governor of NY had issued a warning about power outages during the Coronal Mass Ejection (there was a big solar storm last night) — basically I thought the world was ending and put my laptop in the oven. (it’s a faraday cage)

I may have overreacted.

@justafrog @futurebird @lampsofgold Have you seen the Audubon's "Lights Out" program to protect migrating birds? They're getting some traction.
https://www.audubon.org/our-work/cities-and-towns/lights-out

On this topic, Science has a report about nighttime light pollution. I thought their rating scale was interesting. It started with 'pristine sky', then 'degraded near the horizon', 'degraded to the zenith', 'natural sky lost', 'milky way lost', 'Cones active'. In Singapore, the entire city has skies so bright that cones are active.

The night of the election. GA has just been called for Biden.

But, then rumblings start. GA electors are simply NOT going to report at all as they claim that the election was "irregular" ... this happens in several states. So, although Biden wins by millions in the popular vote, neither Trump nor Biden have 270 electoral college votes.

Over the next week this persists. The decision goes to congress.

Who with a razor thin electoral majority chooses Trump. 1/

Remember when I was posting about ideas to share with your liberal friends that make more sense than giving money to Biden (aw come on!)

Local races, local orgs are better.

I found a good one. This group is doing a recall campaign to get rid a of literal torch carrying nazi who won by just 36 votes while hiding his ties to racism and extremism.

@futurebird I looked up this guy. In response to questions about his white supremacist connections, he basically said (paraphrasing) "I don't promote antisemitic conspiracy theories. That's just something George Soros has tricked people into believing."
