Dariusmiles2123 ,

Yeah Lemmy is really a perfect replacement without any big downside. I really enjoy the community and the help you can get from it.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’m only using Siri to set a timer for cooking or laundry.

I don’t feel like it’s reliable enough to use it for anything else.

If some people are using it a lot, could you tell me what for?

I’d want it to assist me in a calendar and the organization of my kids custody, but it’s really not ready for important things with particularities..

Why publishers are preparing to federate their sites - Digiday ( digiday.com )

The Verge and 404 Media are building out new functions that would allow them to distribute posts on their sites and on federated platforms – like Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky – at the same time. Replies to those posts on those platforms become comments on their sites.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’d be really happy about anything bringing more people on Lemmy and the Fediverse, so I wouldn’t complain about it.

Maybe I’m not seeing the big picture as some people seem to be scared of such a move.

Dariusmiles2123 , (edited )

I’m really interested in trying it if one day I have to get a private phone on top of my company’s iPhone.

It’s great that we start having alternatives to Apple and Google again.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

That’s why I’ll keep buying physical for the games or movies I love.

The only question I have is what’s gonna happen as game discs are just becoming an access token to download the game and its updates.

I’d have nothing against digital games or movies if you didn’t see such behaviors.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Some of them can be supported through Patreon and they’re getting way more money than through YouTube.

But it’s through that it lacks content and it’s also difficult to find content on peertube.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Give what you can and if you can’t it’s also okay.

I’m only giving 1$ a month to the Linux Experiment, but, according to him, that’s way more than what he would get from me watching his videos on YouTube.

I’m also donating 100$ a year to many open source projects, but I might have to give up because of financial troubles too..

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I still have to really try it, but last time I typed « PlayStation » and there was almost no result..maybe it’s just the lack of content though..

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I was talking about channels, reviewing games and so on.

Not the odd homemade video..

Something that you could follow long term to keep being informed, like IGN or gamespot for instance.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’m using peertube quite a lot to follow the Linux Experiment on Tilvids and it works really well.

It’s true that finding other creators to follow looks difficult and the search result aren’t giving you much.

It’s a shame as it makes me keep relying on YouTube for everything gaming (PlayStation) related when I would want to use it less.

Maybe it’s gonna become easier when the upcoming mobile app is launched.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Is it also on iOS? I couldn’t find it and I’m stuck on iPhone because of work.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I use Organic Map on my work iPhone and it works perfectly as a GPS. It’s even allowing me to use Apple Car Play.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I didn’t know that and then it would make me happy to know that Lemmy is beating Reddit at something, but I still think we’re far away from having open source phones we could use every day in every situation.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I always admire the people taking a lot of their free time to do something beneficial for the community.

Be it as a maintainer, a small basketball coach. a village politician.

I’ve always thought about one day giving back everything I’ve received like that, but I haven’t done yet. Right now I have excuses with a difficult parental situation, but there has been many moments where I could and I just haven’t.

So congratulations and thanks to the ones doing it 👍

Does Reddit shadowban mentions of Lemmy?

In the months since I deleted my Reddit accounts and joined Lemmy, the lack of user base growth has made it clear that we need some users to stay on Reddit as a means of shepherding more users over on an ongoing basis. Otherwise, Reddit simply got what it wanted: less users who make a fuss about how it manages its platform...

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Yes it would be nice to have more people on Lemmy to have more activity in the smaller communities, but otherwise I don’t think it’s so important.

Dariusmiles2123 , (edited )

Wouldn’t it be possible to create a Lemmy instance on Peertube (linked to our Lemmy accounts) just for this reason?

I know the videos would take a large space, but as peertube is a video platform, it wouldn’t be such a problem I guess.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

That number seems a bit low, but it’s really important to support Lemmy and your instance.

I’d love to support my instance, but it ain’t doable for now (at least it wasn’t when I looked into it around Christmas).

I also think accepting donations demand some organization with taxes and everything. That’s why some instances don’t accept them.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

We should never produce any plastic for throwable products, but such a product could be a good start for people who aren’t actively trying to avoid plastic packaging.

Still, we also have to change our wasteful mentality and way of life.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

How much more expensive would a dumb TV compared to a Smart TV for the same quality?

That’s a serious question as I had never thought about all these privacy issues before buying a TV.

Dariusmiles2123 OP ,

I have no experience with switching OS on a phone, so sorry if my questions sound dumb.

If I don’t find a custom ROM for this specific model, does it mean I have to give up?

It’s not like Linux which you can put on almost every computer with more or less success?

What do you mean by vendor and kernel tree?

What is Gapps?

Dariusmiles2123 OP ,

Well thanks for all your precise answers.

I’m gonna try to get more knowledge by myself as everything sounds really alien to me right now 😅

Dariusmiles2123 OP ,

I had really thought it would just a tiny bit more difficult than installing Linux on a Windows computer, but apparently I’ll have to learn a lot before trying everything. Thanks for your help 👍

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’ve bought Threema for my whole family on iOS and Androids. Never paid in crypto but always with my normal credit card.

It works perfectly fine and I love it👍

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Exactly. Let us choose if we want to interact with WhatsApp or not.

I’d be ready to sacrifice some security in order to not have WhatsApp installed on my phone.

Of course it would be cool to just get rid of WhatsApp but I can’t force my whole basketball team to go on Threema..

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I can only agree with you, it is a choice we’re making.

Still I don’t feel like I want to tell people other than my family or friends to give up on me or switch to threema.

I’m still thinking about it, but the downsides are bigger than the upsides for now.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

It’s easy not to use Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram.

Even not using Google is easy as you can just use any other search engine like Ecosia.

Sadly, not using WhatsApp would be a real organizational problem for me with people I ain’t close enough to force them to use Threema.

So I’m forced to have both apps installed. Threema for 95% of the time and 5% with WhatsApp.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' ( www.404media.co )

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I wasn’t really against Reddit when I left to go on Lemmy. It was mostly to try something which is luving because of its users.

Now I’m glad I did.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’m using it and enjoying it but I had always thought that it would also work from one device to another without Wifi.

I guess I always had Wifi😅

It is a huge failure in communication to pretend that distro upgrades are entirely different versions of the operating system. It does nothing but make Linux seem more complex than it actually is.

The jump in distro versions, say, from Fedora 38 to Fedora 39, is not the same as the jump from Windows 10 to Windows 11. It's more like the jump from version 23H2 to 24H2....

Dariusmiles2123 ,

It clearly doesn’t stop anyone from trying Linux.

What stops them is compatibility issues with apps or hardware. Otherwise, non geeky people don’t care about these things.

I’d even say that the amount of distributions or desktop environments is more scary for people.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I don’t know anything about Ubuntu touch as I’ve mostly been interested in /e/os, but I know we really need an alternative to iOS and Android.

I’d be willing to support such a project and be ready to compromise a lot.

I’m wondering if some people are managing to daily drive something like Ubuntu touch.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Fedora:

-Window tiling without an extension
-Ability to open a program on a certain workspace without an extension
-An equivalent to Time Machine
-Minimizing/expending buttons by default
-Gnome calendar easily displaying your thunderbird calendar
-Ability to easily try other DE

Otherwise everything is perfectly fine

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Well I’m using Clonezilla because apparently Timeshift has to be set up in a precise way to work on Fedora. To be honest, I don’t have enough knowledge to set up complicated things so that’s why I think it should kind of be enabled by default.

With some things I can take risks but not with a backup tool (even if it’s mostly to backup my settings as the files are saved on kDrive).

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I guess I’m not techie enough to understand the question 😅

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Fedora on a 2012 MacBook Pro works perfectly fine. The only thing not working out of the box was the WiFi but it was really easy to solve.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

At least now, if pictures are real, you can say it’s AI generated.

Still, to be honest, I’ve never understood how some people can let one night stands film them naked.

If it’s a longtime girlfriend or boyfriend and they betray you, it’s different, but people aren’t acting in a clever way when it comes to sex.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

That’s not what I’m talking about.

I’m talking about not being careful who you’re giving these images if you don’t want them to spread online. And, of course, the person sharing it on the web is the guilty person, not the naked victim.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I’m happy for you as it’s always nice to make that first big jump.

You won’t regret it. At least, I haven’t!

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Great!

Is it something which is gonna be naturally added to Fedora or should I download something specific?

The article wasn’t clear to me or maybe I’m not technical enough.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Okay then I guess I’ll just wait until it’s directly implemented in GNOME as it might be more stable 👍

Dariusmiles2123 ,

It’s really nice to see a post like this.

Back in the day I was also dual booting windows and Ubuntu but windows was messing with the system clock.

Then I decided to just have a windows VM to be able to backup my iPhone (not my own choice😞), but I’d want to replace that VM by a MacOs so that at least I learn how to use a new system since I have to keep using windows at work anyway.

The community is a big plus on Linux and you always find someone ready to help you.

I also love the spirit of Linux where you rely way less on big corporations.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I guess a sticky post titled « ditching windows, looking to find my way on Linux » would help and new posts about doing that should be forbidden in the community rules/redirected to the sticky post 😇

But it’s also important to welcome properly newcomers.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Every year I allocate 100.- (around 100$) to share between every geeky project I want to support.

My list includes:
Lemmy, Memmy, Joplin, Wikipedia, Organic Maps, Gnome, Thunderbird, Firefox, peertube)

I could give more, but I could give less.

I’m also trying to support the Linux Experiment with Patreon.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

Well, from reading the linked post it seems inaccurate.

Personally I’ve never used any link in Organic Maps or any advertising.

But thanks for making me aware of that controversy 😇

Dariusmiles2123 , (edited )

On iOs Netnewswire is really great.

I’m also using a firefox extension for my RSS feed (feedbro) on Fedora.

Dariusmiles2123 ,

I use kDrive and it’s great on Ubuntu. A bit less on Fedora but it works well with iOS and Android too.
