Ok that's a really neat adaptation, especially in a snowy. I wonder if they rotate from egg to egg to make sure all are warmed equally.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh that's the perfect shot, right there.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Still amazed by that camouflage. It just looks like he's made out of pure tree bark!

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Ok this is my favorite lol. "What did the prairie dogs just say?? Did you see anything, dude?"

Just craning their necks to max like they can do something like, you know, FLY and go look haha

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

"Scooch! Scoot over! I wanna see too!"

Little sibling vibes are strong with this one lol

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yes! That's the exact vibe. Pinky and The Brain is another fitting odd couple.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh. My. GOD.

I am actually dead. This is more floof than I can possibly endure. I need a stuffed animal version of this guy.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Amazing! I really hope we can leverage what we learn here (pun intended) to treat hearing loss in humans. I can tell you from what I know that there are also several important human medications that are known to cause or exacerbate hearing loss.

And hearing loss in older humans is associated with lower levels of social contact and higher levels of dementia. So the problem in humans is way more significant than just the sensory loss.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it's usually dependent on concentration, so really high doses and/or administering via IV too fast. That can be mitigated with careful monitoring and dosing procedures. But there are some big guns like amphotericin (antifungal), and chemo meds that can be ototoxic at any dose. Sometimes reversible, sometimes not. But if you're in need of any of those, you're officially in the realm of choosing the least bad option to sustain your life.

It's not super common. But it is something we watch out for.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Yeeeeeeep! IV Lasix is the one I deal with most often. Like I said, it's concentration dependent. That's why how fast you push it matters. Some tissue in the lining of the ear is similar to tissue in the kidney that responds to Lasix apparently? I read about it briefly just to confirm it's a real thing and not just an urban legend. Bodies are absolutely bizarre.

I'm just in the habit of never pushing any IV medication fast. There's almost never a need for it, and the risks aren't worth the miniscule amount of time you save.

@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Look at that face coloration! Still so pale, not ready for the big bad world just yet.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

He looks so commanding lol

"SIR! Yes, you down there, Sir! Might I suggest that you cease these noisemaking activities at once."

Chetzemoka OP ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

@anon6789 , is this a spotted owl?? Sister and I both thought it looked like one, but that seems to cool to be true.

Chetzemoka OP ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Anon, you are simply incredible!!! Thank you! I'll pass all this info on to my sister and tell her to try to get more pics. (And I'll be down there for a few days soon, so maybe I can do some owl stalking)

Chetzemoka OP ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

She said she's been hearing it around for a few weeks, so maybe it moved in close. I asked her to download the Merlin app and try to get a recording of its calls for me.

Chetzemoka OP ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh hey, this is great! I'm actually returning to MA via the coast route because I want to stop by some friends and family on Baltimore on my way back. I'll be in the perfect position to check that out. I'll post pics if I do go.

Chetzemoka OP ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

The irony of those mountains. The one in NJ is actually easier for me to get to as I pass by than the one in WV is to get to from my sister's house. That doesn't surprise me actually lol

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

😱 Oh my god! I see where the name comes from. That's truly an eagle that happens to be owl shaped.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Yikes, and as quiet as owls are, these are sniper shots. Imagine just chilling in your nest, enjoying the night, and a predator just appears.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Lil' buddy, you're not alone. I worked 16 hours yesterday; woke up looking approximately identical to this.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely not too often, and it's always voluntary. It's actually illegal to force nurses to stay over their shift in Massachusetts unless there's a major emergency. (Thank god)

Yesterday was a weird situation where at the end of my shift, there was a peritoneal dialysis patient that needed an out of the ordinary treatment. And on the team of dialysis nurses I work per diem with, I'm the one with the most experience with peritoneal dialysis. It would have been way more difficult for one of the evening nurses to do it, so I agreed to stay (and they gave me a bonus to stay, so even better!)

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

That is one good looking family of owls, right there! And with classier digs than my cookie cutter suburban ranch lol

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

I would like to borrow some sleeping skills from this owl 😴

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh this is stunning! WOW

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

It's funny, I've thought the same thing about blue jays, but I went on a hike with a friend this afternoon, and damn if you really couldn't see the things in the dappled shade of trees. I'm honestly only used to seeing them out in full sunlight.

(We had one following us. Clearly used to being fed by humans.)

@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh that's super interesting that when the population is dense, they diversify their calls. Like, "No Jan, I'm not that guy over there. GOD. Get it RIGHT."

Discussing wildlife photography ethics, including the story why this Flammy looks quite displeased ( lemmy.world )

I came across an article called Owls — Not Quite as Clever as We Think and after the post about AI generated images and today's is it real or isn't it pic of the Northern Lights https://lemmy.world/post/15495156, I felt now was the right time to share this article and see some of your opinions on the matter. I feels it's a...

@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Heck yeah, Flammy Friday 💪 I'm interested to learn that our little buddy was so chill about his home being invaded for research and photography.

Tl;dr for those who didn't read the article - the chainsawed out parts of the tree could be placed back over the nest like a lid when visiting time was done, and filming/botherance was kept to 20 mins max each night.

Honestly quite respectful for someone who reads as being so burned out as this guy. He seems quite cynical (even calling out his wife's choice of inferior camera lens for a picture she seemed excited about? My dude.)

The debate on wild pics vs. staged pics (personally I wouldn't use the term "fake" because it's not like they're using animatronic birds) reminds me a lot of the debate about using "false color" photos in astronomy.

Almost none of the astronomical structures you see published from the fancy telescopes would look anything like that if you were in a spaceship up close. Because decisions have to be made about things like how to present wavelengths of light that can't be seen by humans, but are present in the telescope data. So there a certain amount of actual artistry that goes into producing the final published photos.

I'm happy for the artifice as long as it's done with careful consideration specifically to achieve science communication and education. I think staging photos and videos of animals that would be intrusive or impossible to capture in the wild falls within the same realm of art performed in service of education and I'm ok with it.

@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

I love it that humans will go to this much effort to save tiny animals. Great job, all involved!

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

That is a grey cotton ball.

And a butterfly net makes a lot more sense than a fly swatter, which is what I was picturing as well haha

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

I was picturing an owl hanging upside down from claws clinging to a fly swatter, which is actually a hilarious image hahaha

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

How wild that these continents have such similar owls when so many other continents have owls that look like total aliens to me. Cause if you'd have told me that these were pics of a Burrowing Owl and a GHO, I'd 100% have believed you.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

This is incredible for comparison!! Thank you!!!

I'm actually surprised that they look more similar than I expected. Especially the coloring on this Pharoah individual and this Eurasian individual. But that body shape is surprisingly preserved across a lot of different geographies.

When it works, it works, I guess.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh my goodness, I am very here for Goth Owl.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Fuzzy paaaaants though

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Just like any child haha. "Oh, would you look at that! I have LEGS!"

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Pants are the best part of owl-natomy. Love it.

Also, good to know you can safely just put em back in trees, if you find a baby that fell down!

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Too fuzzy for this harsh world 😭

Also, shout out Franklin County! My home for 12 years back in the day.

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

This one is my favorite. Is his face differently colored because of environment? Or because he's juvenile?

Chetzemoka ,
@Chetzemoka@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah! I even upvoted that post lol. That is truly a dramatic color shift. Really fascinating.
