Prevention is (almost always) cheaper than treatment, and homelessness does not break this rule.
Economists recently used a randomized control trial to estimate the effectiveness of giving households on the brink of homelessness cash to prevent it, $2000 on average.
The results of this temporary assistance were a 73% reduction in the risk of homelessness after one year and that each dollar spent generated $2.47 in benefits to the community.
Hi pachyderms, I'm Rae, Black, disabled photography & gaming nerd. We need toilet paper, some food and #poverty is kicking my ass. My gas bill is thankfully lower (we're chilly in here lol), so pls support my #SmallBusiness if you can!
My question is, can a low income person with disabilities move to Italy? Would they be able to transfer their SSI to Italy? See, this is what I mean when people just say, you don't have to be rich to move to another country. You're not thinking about the ultra poor and disabled.
@MikeDunnAuthor I think I "yupped" so hard throughout this paper I hurt myself.
"Inequality also increases consumerism. Perceived links between wealth and self-worth drive people to buy goods associated with high social status and thus enhance how they appear to others — as US economist Thorstein Veblen set out more than a century ago in his book The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899). Studies show that people who live in more-unequal societies spend more on status goods."
@MikeDunnAuthor ...bingo....tax policy has been a wreck, turbo-charged by equally damaging court rulings allowing unrestrained money contributions into the political process.....those failures feed on the 99%.....
Hi pachyderms, I'm Rae, Black, disabled photography & gaming nerd. I'm going to start streaming again on Fri 15th! In the meantime, #poverty is kicking my ass! My gas bill is coming due, so pls support my #SmallBusiness if you can!
Today in Labor History February 27, 1902: John Steinbeck was born on this date in Salinas, California. He wrote numerous novels from the perspective of farmers and working-class people, including “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Tortilla Flats” “Of Mice and Men,” “Cannery Row,” and “East of Eden.” In 1935, he joined the communist League of American Writers. He faced contempt charges for refusing to cooperate with HUAC. The FBI and the IRS harassed him throughout his career. Yet he wrote glowingly about U.S. troops during the Vietnam War. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962 and the Pulitzer in 1939.

It's February, pachyderms & the universe is being antiBlack during Black History Month. I got the kid pants! Gas bill was an obscene 245 bucks this month & my rollator is falling apart. I need bread, milk and transit funds!
I saw this rollator on Amazon, and I really like it. There's another one from a more reputable company, but it's also a hundred dollars more, and I'm hoping someone will be kind enough to get me the cheap little bread machine on my #ThroneWishlist so I can save some money long term by making bread instead of buying it. A new crockpot would be nice too so I could cook more. Being disabled is stressful
He says it’s not his intent to unduly villainize any particular group, and I believe him. But it brought back a lot of memories from my chaotic youth in trailer parks and I’m pretty ready to hate some fucking landlords
@Sophie
So much injustice is highlighted in that book. What really stuck with me was the class/race separated rental market where people of the "right" demographic pay the same rent for a nice flat as someone from the "wrong" one pay for an absolute dump in a different part of town. @bookstodon
It's February, pachyderms & the universe is being antiBlack during Black History Month. I got the kid pants! The cat broke a toy, & my rollator is falling apart. I need bread, milk and transit funds!
It's February, pachyderms & the universe is being antiBlack during Black History Month. I need to replace some broken dishes, my rollator, and get pants & sneakers for my kid. Also need transit funds. Happy to send evidence of purchases.
