While I'm on "origin stories", I previously found a video on where gold comes from (see previous post). Now, how about money as a concept? Where did that start? Here is an article on that: https://mastodon.social/@theconversationau/112552257174870177

In the year 284 This Tetradrachm was issued under Roman Emperor Numerian. I am constantly amazed that a coin minted nearly 2,000 years ago can be dated to the year! For that, and much more on this period and coin, including the wisdom of @phistorians please check out: https://coinofnote.com/284-rome-numerian-tetradrachm/

If that hasn't tempted you already, then maybe the threat of my poetry will?

I'm not late for , it turns out time is an illusion (Lunchtime doubly so). Since I've started whimsical, I'll go with the fun piece I just wrote up - an Imitation Spade Guinea "In memory of the good old days". You should definitely read:https://coinofnote.com/imitation-spade-guinea-good-old-days-uk/ - it talks of I can't afford, imitations of which there are many, garden implements & late 1800s ! Enjoy :)

One new coin for me this week, but it's a neat, old, cent - the 1857 Flying Eagle cent. Yes, a coin with a on it! I know you never expected that from me :D

I haven't posted much in awhile, so here's a random on my desk. Iron 1 Mon coin from . Minted in the 1700-1800s. I think this might be the "Ku" or 久 reverse mark type (above hole on the reverse). If so, minted 1768 - 1772. TBH, it's hard to tell. Many of these which are about aren't in much better shape. The one on Numista is similar: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces142546.html Here are other 1 Mon iron coins: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=japan_section&r=&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tt=y&tp=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=1+mon&i=&b=&ie=&u=&a=&dg=&m=13&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&d=

    Ok reflecting back on the #AtoZChallenge. I loved it! It was a good challenge both choosing countries / coins & getting it all written. My first thought was to make the posts shorter.... but they didn't end up any shorter, which I take as my own inability to compromise on information - & how fascinating everything is! One I learnt a lot writing was the Roman Denarius Fouree: https://coinofnote.com/19-b-c-rome-augustus-denarius-fouree/

    Part 2 of my #AtoZChallenge2024 reflection. I love the personal connection you find with #coins & the community. I wrote most of the posts in the weeks prior to the #AtoZChallenge. This was fortuitous as my mother passed away early in April. But those connections made it a joy to re-read each post & share it. Today's #coin is from day "D", #Denmark, & a park open when my ancesters lived there: https://coinofnote.com/25-ore-token-denmark-dyrehavsbakken/

    Apologies for many posts today - I was excited after the :) In any case, I also discovered another server I could log into & search for hashtags like & & see a whole bunch of posts I never saw before. I really wish the Fediverse had a simple way of seeing EVERYTHING posted anywhere on Mastodon with a particular hashtag!
    (@FediTips do you know, will me sharing posts help me see future posts from those servers, or do I actually have to follow those accounts?)

    CoinOfNote OP ,
    @CoinOfNote@historians.social avatar

    @FediTips but that's my point, there's no way for me to say "I want to follow the hashtag and see everything anyone on any server posts about it". I can't even set it to see any post with that hashtag by any server mine federate with. I can follow the hashtag, but I'll only see posts from people on my server, people I follow, people others on my server follow. It's next to impossible to find anyone "new".

    CoinOfNote OP ,
    @CoinOfNote@historians.social avatar

    @FediTips ok practical question rather than a whine - I've found these posts from people who sometimes post about Numismatics. How can I set it up so I will see (only) their numismatic posts in future? Do I have to follow them and then block posts which don't have say ?

    FediTips ,
    @FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

    @CoinOfNote

    That's a really really interesting question, haven't heard that suggested before! A kind of inverse filter? 🤔

    There is a filter system but it's designed for hiding stuff rather than highlighting stuff:

    https://fedi.tips/filtering-your-timeline-to-hide-posts-on-mastodon/

    If the account is visible to your server anyway (for example if someone else is following them) you could just follow the hashtag. But ideally they would post to the group too rather than just the tag, so that no one has to follow them.

    CoinOfNote OP ,
    @CoinOfNote@historians.social avatar

    @FediTips oh absolutely, and it is broadly great here, but there are limitations which are quite crippling was my point - like search. Hence the need for groups like @numismatics (if groups followed even just their own name hashtag - like in this case - that would help). Anyway thanks heaps for letting me rant!

    As per the boost of @phistorians's post, today is the traditional date celebrated as the founding of Rome by Remus and Romulus, raised by a she-wolf and pictured on this coin issued by Constantine I (the Great) in 333-334 A.D. (Roma on obverse). Minted in Treveri (Germany), if I'd thought of the date when planning this weekend's posts I probably would have written it up for today.
