Finally sitting down to watch/listen to the podcast with Mike Mccue, CEO of Flipboard, and Ryan Barrett, creator of BridgyFed.

This should be good!😁

So cool to see the leaders in this space share info and help each other make this the best social media project it could be! 1/?

@BeAware

In fact people were upset that Threads made federation opt-in.

Quote Posts, being able to limit them, and possibly being able to limit replies, is coming to Fediverse soon enough.

I am a bit worried about these features for all the same reasons that others are, as well.

However, I have another worry that I haven't seen talked about yet, because it's a limited experience so far.

Threads added the ability to limit Quote Posts yesterday and I've already played around with it to see how it works.

I'm worried about Mastodon using the same kind of way to limit Quote Posts as Threads.

Currently, the way Threads does Quote Posts, is that whenever you post a link to a post, it automatically turns into a quote post. Therefore, when you limit them, nobody can even link your post on the site at all.

That's currently how Threads Quote Post limiting works and that really sucks if that severe limitation would come to the wider Fediverse.

My worries might be unfounded. This might be not at all how Mastodon will be doing it and everything will be fine.

Any opinions on the matter?🤔

Die4ever ,

@BeAware I don't pay attention to the microblogging side of things that much (I'm more of a Lemmy guy), but how do the concerns around quote posts differ from linked posts? Quotes and links seem like the same thing to me, except maybe links won't have as good a preview as quotes do?

BeAware OP ,
@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

@Die4ever To me, that's THE difference, it's a barrier because not everyone would click the link. Also, this would limit it for DMs too, I would think, because of the way DMs are, they're just a "private" post, no difference......you see how that could be a dumb limit? Maybe not, but there's way's around that I guess.

Can just tell a person the other person's username and tell them to find the post themselves or just link up off-platform.🤷‍♂️

Just seems dumb. Especially with the amount of misinformation this can cause. People won't get their wrong info checked if they just limit replies and quotes....that's a big yikes for me.

It's such an exciting time for social media.

Fediverse is going near-mainstream due to wide adoption.

Bluesky now "unofficially" federates with the fantastic work of Ryan Barrett's BridgyFed!

Threads has one-way federation and claims to plan to fully federate soon enough.

Flipboard is actively working on Federation, some parts already working!

Nostr is federated using the Momostr Pink bridge which also bridges Threads.

The future of interconnected social media is now. Exciting times, we are in!😁

@BeAware

momostr ?
what's the story behind it ?
is that a fork / another instance of mostr.pub ?

luca ,
@luca@sironi.tk avatar

@NEW1_ @BeAware i do use mostr.pub which works great.

I was surprised to find out from this discussion that there is also momostr.pink, which i guess is another instance of the same software

Have someone got their instance to federate with ?

I've read something about it but didn't see any real case yet.

Also, does it federates articles? like , , , ,

Seeing integration with is pretty cool!

For those who prefer a bulletin board interface for the , this is pretty darn attractive. Anyone who was active with Internet forums back in the '90s and '00s would love this quite a lot.

As many of us know, the problem with old Internet forums is that, while they provided a cozy community for folks who liked to follow specific topics, they often died because the likes of Facebook simply had a larger network effect.

But with NodeBB and ActivityPub, Internet forums may soon find that they have a network effect of hundreds of millions of people.

If you ever used Internet forums but have since stopped, would NodeBB's foray into the Fediverse have you increase your participation with them again?

@atomicpoet @fediversenews really cool to see @julian @devnull get some publicity. I'm so excited for stuff like this. AP needs more variety of types of services just to show off what this awesome protocol can do!

Microblogs are just the beginning, I'm sure.

I have so many follow relationships with so many talented people here!

It's so great to see all of you and your interesting projects and creations across such a variety of hobbies and professions.

It's only going to get better with Threads federation under way! Future of Fedi will sure be interesting and I'm glad to be a part of something that could fundamentally change the way "Internet" is done as a whole.

The future awaits. After years of gaining steam, Fedi has arrived.

@BeAware

Best case scenario? It flops and goes nowhere. I came here to not support Facebook or Twitter in any way, because they are accelerating the spread of ideological cancer across the world at a horrific rate. I just can't understand how anybody could be excited to support that.

As expected, when an instance attempts to respond to a Note with a larger audience than the note replied to, Mastodon will silently drop it from processing.

I don't actually know if this is codified anywhere in or spec, but looking into it now. 💪

Edit: Might be it actually is processed, but doesn't link up to the more-restrictive parent. Also good I think. Not quite sure how I'd handle this in ...

trwnh ,
@trwnh@mastodon.social avatar

@devnull it should link up and be handled fine... not sure what your test case looks like?

@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

ActivityPub is so neat! With all the new implementations coming out, it's slowly becoming my "one stop shop" internet aggregator.

For example, all from within my Mastodon instance I can:

Follow communities on Lemmy and Kbin, allowing me to interact with every post/comment and make my own post or comment to any community.

Follow my favorite podcasts and get new episodes directly in my feed via PodcastIndex.org

Follow WordPress blogs that have the ActivityPub plugin activated.

SOON enough I'll be able to:

Interact/follow accounts on Threads (and hopefully someday Instagram)

Follow/interact with comments/posts/communities from NodeBB forums.

This protocol is changing the internet and how I use it every day.

PS. If you want more information on how to do any of these things, just let me know and I will explain. Though please limit to asking about one or two at a time, as some are quite intricate in their implementations.

Edit: Nitter has been shut down 2 days after I posted this. Oh well. Fuck Xhitter

Dalyrceri ,
@Dalyrceri@mastodon.world avatar

@BeAware Do you happen to know what links the accounts? For example, if you have multiple Threads accounts with different user names, can you still link them into a single ActivityPub account (without Meta knowing you're doing that)?

devnull ,
@devnull@crag.social avatar

@BeAware @Dalyrceri not with that attitude 😏

Someone could create an account aggregator service that just listens to multiple other accounts and reposts their content 😁

Sunday MIGHT be blog day...🤔

I haven't done that in A LONG TIME. However, there's been LOTS happening and I'm very excited for the future of the platform, right now.

I am obviously still a little cynical when it comes to corporations and their intentions with Fedi, though.

If I have time, (and if I feel good enough. Anxiety is a bitch) I'll do a writing session and detail my thoughts, reasonings, and experiences with this social movement so far.

I'll also be detailing the nuances of each cross-platform integration I have firsthand experience with.

Let me know if this is a type of blog post would be interesting or intriguing to you and it might help me with motivation to pull it off. I don't want to "yell into the void". Especially with something I have so much passion for, and will take some time to complete.
