The most important thing when choosing a instance is the admin team and IMHO the best options are the infosec.* family of services. I highly recommend .

Iceshrimp: A fediverse platform

Was just told (by @Subversivo ) about this: https://iceshrimp.dev/iceshrimp/iceshrimp.net

are rewriting the whole thing (a JS/Node / fork) in C# with Blazor for the frontend.

Cool to see. Should handle the performance issues that have plagued the *key forks and maybe provide a new general branch of fediverse platform.

What lang/stack isn't represented on the fediverse now? C++, Kotlin?

This noob is testing the interconnectivity of the :

The word out there on the Fediverse make it seem as if all the different tools (Mastdn/P-tube/Lemmy/etc.) can interact with one another. But this is not the case, as some work both ways, whilst others only one way, or at all.

So made accounts & been testing for past few weeks:

Quote Posts, being able to limit them, and possibly being able to limit replies, is coming to Fediverse soon enough.

I am a bit worried about these features for all the same reasons that others are, as well.

However, I have another worry that I haven't seen talked about yet, because it's a limited experience so far.

Threads added the ability to limit Quote Posts yesterday and I've already played around with it to see how it works.

I'm worried about Mastodon using the same kind of way to limit Quote Posts as Threads.

Currently, the way Threads does Quote Posts, is that whenever you post a link to a post, it automatically turns into a quote post. Therefore, when you limit them, nobody can even link your post on the site at all.

That's currently how Threads Quote Post limiting works and that really sucks if that severe limitation would come to the wider Fediverse.

My worries might be unfounded. This might be not at all how Mastodon will be doing it and everything will be fine.

Any opinions on the matter?🤔

Finally sitting down to watch/listen to the podcast with Mike Mccue, CEO of Flipboard, and Ryan Barrett, creator of BridgyFed.

This should be good!😁

So cool to see the leaders in this space share info and help each other make this the best social media project it could be! 1/?

Ryan made a pretty good point around the 16 minute mark about how Threads wasn't told to make their federation "opt-in" from the Fediverse side and that people feel differently about bridges for some reason.

Even though, they're the same thing, in most ways. 2/?

BeAware OP , (edited )
@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

So, at the 29 minute mark, Ryan talks about how Mastodon's search discoverability feature is currently opt-in and there's only 5-6% of people currently opting-in. That's a wild statistic!😬 3/?

Sunday MIGHT be blog day...🤔

I haven't done that in A LONG TIME. However, there's been LOTS happening and I'm very excited for the future of the platform, right now.

I am obviously still a little cynical when it comes to corporations and their intentions with Fedi, though.

If I have time, (and if I feel good enough. Anxiety is a bitch) I'll do a writing session and detail my thoughts, reasonings, and experiences with this social movement so far.

I'll also be detailing the nuances of each cross-platform integration I have firsthand experience with.

Let me know if this is a type of blog post would be interesting or intriguing to you and it might help me with motivation to pull it off. I don't want to "yell into the void". Especially with something I have so much passion for, and will take some time to complete.

It's such an exciting time for social media.

Fediverse is going near-mainstream due to wide adoption.

Bluesky now "unofficially" federates with the fantastic work of Ryan Barrett's BridgyFed!

Threads has one-way federation and claims to plan to fully federate soon enough.

Flipboard is actively working on Federation, some parts already working!

Nostr is federated using the Momostr Pink bridge which also bridges Threads.

The future of interconnected social media is now. Exciting times, we are in!😁

FediTip of the day:

If your profile and posts are set to "public" and you can read this very post, you should have no sense of "privacy" here on Fedi. That means ANYONE can reply.

There's 20,000+ instances and new ones every day, there's NO WAY to tell who is accessing your posts or what they're doing with them.

Fediverse is not some kinda "bastion for privacy" nor is there any sort of "consent" required to see your posts if they are public.

The only way you can be 100% sure that your followers are the only ones that directly see your posts is to make your profile and posts private. Even then, screenshots exist.

Remember, you're on the internet. Once you post it, it's probably not going away. This is true everywhere.

BeAware , to random

If there were ever a single post that truly shows how running a Fedi instance is, that I could boost to the moon, it's this one.

People still somehow think that Fedi is "opt-in" or "privacy focused" or even "community focused". None of these things are true and I wish more people understood.

It's not a BAD thing, per se. I like it, personally. I choose who I want to interact with by blocking those instances I DON'T want to interact with, but it's OPEN BY DEFAULT is something some people can't grasp.😬

Some people get replies and just do not engage at all....

Like, what is the point of posting to social media if you're not even gonna be SOCIAL?!?🤦‍♂️

Especially Fedi, cause it's not like we have some dumb ad service that pays you for views...You ain't making money here unless you're posting off-platform links to buy stuff.

I just don't get it. It's social media. Not "shout to the void and ignore everyone" media.🙄

Well, I have deleted the Threads app. They don't seem interested in integrating in good faith, unfortunately. Therefore I don't see any point in advocating for them further.

Federate with them if you wish, but my first hand experience with their dev team has been completely in bad faith on their part...🤦‍♂️

Every now and then while browsing the Federated timeline, I'll come across that dumb troll who says something like "Fediverse SUCKS! There's nobody here!!!"

All I can think in that moment is, "oh yeah? Then who the fuck are you and why are you on my timeline?!?!"

🤦‍♂️people are so dumb. Don't post on a platform and complain about it unless you're trying to make the platform better.

I said it elsewhere, but I say it here too, I HATE how corporate social media sites have taken SOCIAL out of social media.

Thankfully the Fediverse is mostly taking that back. But if we don't expand to get those that are still on corporate social media to move here, then we'll just become the echo chambers we hate. That's why the Threads integration is a good thing. We need to expand.

BeAware , to random

It's completely asinine that an instance I've defederated from that doesn't use "authorized fetch" (proprietary mastodon implementation) can see my posts and interact with them as if I can see them.

I'm basically giving promotions to asshats in my replies from gross instances because blocks don't work like they should...

This is why I don't see Threads federating with these platforms for very long. Every Fedi software that doesn't adopt Authorized Fetch, will be breaking their terms. There IS a few proposals on how AP could officially implement a similar feature, but as of right now, it's the wild west here.

Ugh. I wish Fedi wasn't so reliant on domains....

Back when my naive self started Fedi, I went with the most known software (mastodon). But after months of dev incompetence, it's obviously not where I want to be, but I like my domain....

I guess I'm basically stuck with all these bad UI updates and no moderation features....😬🤦‍♂️

BeAware OP , (edited )
@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

@AmyIsCoolz @winsdominoes as far as I'm seeing, the only way to solve it (which isn't a solution) is to just use a subdomain. of course that adds another piece to your domain on fedi, but that's the only way to go about it and still sorta keep the domain.🤦‍♂️

Edit: also if the Fedi domain isn't that important and what you type into the address bar is more important, you can do the subdomain and then redirect the main domain to point to the subdomain🤷‍♂️

It's so great to see all of you and your interesting projects and creations across such a variety of hobbies and professions.

It's only going to get better with Threads federation under way! Future of Fedi will sure be interesting and I'm glad to be a part of something that could fundamentally change the way "Internet" is done as a whole.

The future awaits. After years of gaining steam, Fedi has arrived.

I've been meaning to do a "State of the Shark" post for a while, and go through and explain some of the history and important moments that blahaj.zone has been through. For those of you who have been here for a while, you know it got a bit rough at points, and I want to take the chance to explain some of what happened.

I joined the fediverse in April 2022, around 6 months before the big twitter exodus in November 2022.

I fell in love with what I perceived to be the freedom of instances to create safe spaces for trans folk that had been harassed on twitter (At the time, I didn't have an awareness of how that inclusion doesn't always extend to trans folk that don't have white privilege)

I was talking to a friend @supakaity (well, friend at the time. Now we're partners, together with @internutter) and she said that she was planning on spinning up a fediverse instance. Kaity would supply the technical skills, and I would bring my community building and development experience and be "front of house". We did some brain storming, and came up with several names centered on blåhaj, because we wanted the instance to be focused on trans and gender diverse folk, without being specifically restricted to trans users. And so, in late November 2022, blahaj.zone was born.

Initially, we tried Misskey, mostly because I hated the Mastodon interface and wanted something prettier. But Misskey has very little documentation in english, and not much usage outside of Japan. At the time, there weren't many Misskey forks, with FoundKey and Calckey being the main options.

We had a look at Calckey, and decided to go with it. It had a small but active development team, and several instances already running it. And so we went live with Calckey. Kaity, being Kaity, would listen to some of my frustrations around usability, and started to expand the feature set of Calckey. Many of these fixes got pushed back to Calckey main, but not all of them. Those that were not pushed up to Calckey stayed in use on blahaj.zone though, and eventually we named our little soft fork of Calckey "Hajkey" (pronounced Hi-Key).

Around this time, Calckey was starting to get traction, and we were starting to get users who would join, just to try out some of the features that Kaity was working on. And for a while, all was good.

But for reasons that don't belong in this post, we eventually fell out of step with the Calckey development team and decided to go our own way. When Calckey rebranded as Firefish, we formally parted ways.

But that left us a dilemma. We did not want to move to the Firefish software base, as it was moving in technical directions that we didn't want to go. And we couldn't stay on our version of Calckey/Hajkey, as some of the bugs were show stoppers. So we had to look at alternatives, and decided to rebase Hajkey off of Iceshrimp.

And then Kaity got in to a really bad accident. Concussion, broken jaw, and an injury to her arm that even now, still hasn't been resolved. So blahaj.zone entered limbo. We were partially rebased on ice-shrimp, but without the chance to fully integrate all of the Hajkey features, and with federation bugs and issues. The instance was up and running, but it was wounded, and the task of updating it seemed impossible, especially whilst recovering from a major accident.

And that's how we existed for many months...

Ultimately, we made the decision to rebase again, this time on Sharkey, but even then, the work of implementing all of the Hajkey specific changes was huge, and so, we made the decision to let Hajkey go, and move to vanilla Sharkey.

And here we are now, running Sharkey, and with the instance humming again! I've made Kaity promise to try and not end up creating a huge workload for herself by re-creating the Hajkey features as Hajkey, so our hope is that over time, we will add at least some of them to Sharkey itself. That way, every Sharkey update will not involve a day of code merging from Kaity.

As much as I miss some of our old features, I am so much happier to have blahaj.zone buzzing and alive again!

Thank you to everyone, and here's to a strong future!

The founding developer of Firefish has officially stepped down from the project. Keys are being transferred to one of the dev leads.

It appears Firefish IS still breathing, albeit flopping around at the edge of the pond right now.

Many instances migrated to other Forkeys - Sharkey or IceShrimp. A newcomer, Catodon, is also emerging.

Glad to see Firefish given a chance to survive, and wish them the best!
