The German state of Saxonia still has over 10k #Bitcoin (given current fictional valuation almost 3 billion EUR) which were seized from an illegal video streaming platform (the course of Bitcoin was a lot lower back then).
They are contemplating selling them and this could actually be interesting just to make it obvious how little actual liquidity there is. Because they wouldn't exchange for other Shitcoins but for hard cash. Could get interesting.
so, i've been nosing around #nostr for the past couple of days, and honestly, nothing about it really call my name. i went as far as to create a lightning wallet (serious "iugh" here). i'm seriously disappointed with the whole thing because it seems like it's just a circlejerk of #cryptobros all completely obsessed with #bitcoin and nothing else, all around.
and you know what bugs me the most? it's all about money. there's no real substance. money, money, btc, transactions, bad-bank, money again, etc.
it's like they're more of a cult than a community, totally closed off to newcomers (you might as well not exist if you're new). and just like bluesky and x, it's all about these celebrity-like accounts, just circling around each other, shutting out the rest of us.
everything just feels so phony and false: the woke posts from nostr-client developers (looks like everyone is "building tools" for it), the so-called tech gurus, even jack himself; not to mention all the users pushing web-3 crap. just crypto, money, "i am rich because of btc" and more boring stuff.
anyway, i've kept my npub just for laughs, and because i think there's a chance it could be taken over by some genuinely interesting people and i can't wait for it to happen and try again.
Last year my mom (who you must understand is a retired math prof and very persistent) started bugging me about wanting to learn about bitcoin.
I had some left over (about 0.03 BTC which was like $200) from a long time ago and was able to use a little php program running in thony on my macbook to generate some wallets. I made her a wallet.
Recently I sold all her toy bitcoin. Executive decision. It was absurdly high again. I'm feeling smug about this... for now. #bitcoin#badideas
this episode of ALAB is almost five years old but still a joy to listen to in the wake of the judge's ruling today that Craig Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto
“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
The proposed idea of degrowth has been ignored by the neoliberal establishment for many years. More recently, they’ve ridiculed the concept as foolishly impractical or as a naive fantasy.
Now, however, they’re rolling out pro-growth economists to fight against it.
Looks like we’re starting to win. I only hope it’s not too late.
Euphoria has risen along with crypto prices, but nothing has changed from the last bubble. Also in this issue: Tether-related defamation lawsuits, intra-government infighting, and a disappointing $300 million Bored Ape video game.
the bitcoin price is up, which means it's time for endless comments from crypto bros who somehow both 1) know that i'm critical of crypto and 2) have no idea WHY i'm critical
Bitcoin's spiking — are we in for another round of crypto mania? I also go through Sam Bankman-Fried's sentencing memorandum, in which he asks for 6 years imprisonment instead of the recommended 100, and the 29 people who wrote letters in support.
The AI boom requires massive data centers that consume enormous amounts of water and energy.
Tech CEOs have plans for hundreds more hyperscale facilities in the coming years, but activists around the world are fighting back to protect their communities and force us to ask who really benefits from the future Silicon Valley is building.
@parismarx
The power consumption of #AI engines and the power consumption of #bitcoin mining have one (key) thing in common:
They both rely on power-hungry video cards to do their calculations.
We need to push the #VideoCard industry to start focusing on making their cards less power hungry. I shouldn't need a 1000watt #PSU to power my computer. #nVidia#Radeon#AMD#Intel
I think it is important to specify that it's not "cryptocurrency" (who mostly adapted other consensus systems). It's specifically #Bitcoin that keeps burning the planet for its supporters' libertarian fantasies.
The other cryptocurrencies are just financial fraud with less significant environmental impact.
