#Conservatives are typically loath to sign off on any #government spending patch aimed at averting a #shutdown, slamming those stopgaps as further evidence of a broken Washington [as they cause the breakage] stuck on a woeful fiscal trajectory.

But this year is different.

deadline passes as votes on spending bill
The already passed the $1.2T bill. Funding for parts of the expired at 12:01AM Sat — but the Senate was working its way through a series of amendments to fund agencies for the next 6 months, which means the lapse in funding could end before fed come in Mon.

The #House approved $1.2T spending package Fri, just hours before a 12AM govt #shutdown — forcing the #Senate against a ticking clock to pass the measure. The bill, passed by a 286 to 134 vote, would fund about ¾ of the fed govt for the next 6 mos, while also raising #military #pay, eliminating #UnitedStates funding for the #UN relief agency for #Palestinians & bolstering #security at the US-Mexico #border.

The #legislation’s passage in the #Senate is not in doubt — it has the support of President #Biden (cuz it’s better than nothing), Senate Majority Leader Chuck #Schumer & Minority Leader Mitch #McConnell. But a single senator can throw up procedural roadblocks & push the govt past the #shutdown deadline….

…>½ of #IRS employees would face furloughs at the height of #tax filing season. #Border Patrol officers & about 1.3M active-duty #military #service members would remain on the job #withoutPay.

#TSA screeners would remain on the job #withoutPay, many of whom called in sick as a #protest after a previous #shutdown dragged on for wks, sparking nationwide #travel delays.

It would also leave #Congress w/few alternate paths to fund the govt. A likely last resort would have been another #stopgap resolution to preserve existing #funding, potentially triggering #cuts to #defense spending.

#Schumer …said #Congress has hrs to avoid a #shutdown & the Senate will…[act] as soon as it gets #legislation from the #House.
Sens #RandPaul, #MikeLee & #BillHagerty already signaled they are likely to offer amendments, slowing…[passage].

Any number of senators may create procedural hurdles for the bill’s passage & demand votes on proposed changes or object to its quick consideration. Those tactics could push passage past 12:01AM on Sat, when funding expires.

Late last yr, chopped the spending process in half, creating 2 partial govt deadlines instead of 1, in an effort to avoid asking members to take a single vote on a huge catchall to fund the entire govt, which have objected to repeatedly.

"On Wednesday, the House Freedom Caucus published a letter threatening a government shutdown in which it outlines a number of policies that are needed to supposedly avert such a result. Listed among these policies are restrictions on gender affirming care, transgender participation in sports, DEI programs, and defunding Planned Parenthood."

The classified documents case will make use of a recording which indicates that #Trump had a highly sensitive document which he knew was NOT declassified.

The chain of evidence looks strong and while there is much news media spinning, a court of law is more rigorous environment where focus on fact is primary
