From a survey of @penn_state : "72% …reported they had not purchased a course’s required textbook, and 33% said they had not registered for a specific course because of its cost of required course materials. In addition, 33% said they had earned a poor grade because they couldn’t afford to purchase a course textbook, and 17% dropped a course because of the cost of materials required for the course."

This suddenly reminds me of US healthcare, where you pay a lot every month and then need care and have to pay a whole lot more. Students pay so much in tuition; what if the cost of materials & fees were bundled into that, so that once you become a student (which is hard enough) you don't have to face additional costs for the learning you're there to do?

Back in 2009, my profs taught students "illegally" (as the uni prohibited this) how to get the textbooks for cheap (semi-legal, but overseas editions)

$80 texts cost $15 if you ordered from India.

This was the Economics department, so some students figured it out, told the profs, and then the profs got in trouble for telling other students.

Anyone interested in a $250 stipend for peer reviewing an OER textbook, "Intro to Communication and Media Studies"? It's adapted from several sources and has some original contributions by both me and my students. Due to a federal grant requirement, this is only open to those living in the U.S. I need three reviewers! Happy to answer any questions.

@jjsylvia @academicchatter @academicsunite Well I'm no academic and I don't need to get paid; I'd just like to have my name as a reviewer. I currently am Communications Director for the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD.org) and have about 15 experience in digital marketing.

@jjsylvia @academicchatter @academicsunite what's the time commitment? Is there a template or rubric for review or is it open? do they need to have a communications and media background? I don't (linguistics), but years of experience working with English as a second/subsequent language and could provide some feedback on accessibility for that demographic.

Oh, before I forget again, if anyone I know is interested in in any way and has been doing work with it and would like to present at this year's Florida OER Summit in May, we're soliciting proposals now! The website is: https://www.flvc.org/oersummit and the theme is innovation and trends. We have people from all over present at this virtual event, so visiting FL is not a necessity! @academicchatter
