"Look!" I said to my 8 year old.

"I found a new species in our garden. A Wasp!"

... 20 seconds of her silently staring at the picture...

"That's not a Wasp.." she then said, looking at me.

"Then what is it?!" I asked.

10 more seconds staring at the picture.

"A fly?!" she asked with some doubt in her voice, looking curiously at me.

Me : "🥳 😍 🥳💚 🥳 😊😊 😊 "

Here's the syrphid fly larva I found yesterday. I kept trying to get the eyes in focus but gave up, learning later that they don't have them (never got that memo for some reason). Any guesses on genus? I'm rearing it!

Margined calligraphers (Toxomerus marginatus) mating on lavender buds. In case you're curious, the male (top) does the flying when the pair needs to relocate.

Hover flies come in second only to bees during pollination studies. Although they may not be prolific, they may be more efficient pollinators than bees. Bees collect pollen that is fed to their larvae and they are limited to their home ranges. Hover flies can carry pollen much further than bees.
