they were lucky to get $19

that is high paying here in the US especially now that companies have lowered pay to pre-covid levels or lower know people making $11 or lower an hour still

federal minimum wage in the US is $7.25 as are most states

think Biden is going to reuse that campaign promise for this upcoming election so fingers crossed (again)

to make matters worse where the lowest paying jobs are have had sky high housing and living costs pushing lower income workers out landing them in the streets or to the nearest town that has not been gentrified if they have the funds to move

for example town next county over from us has been kept intentionally poor just to attract people who have been forced to move due to high costs and low pay with underfunded schools to match

What the fuck you talking about. That fucking Google. I make 18.50 and don't have a degree our work in tech. And I don't live in a city that has high cost of living. You out your mind saying 19 is good enough?

SoleInvictus ,
@SoleInvictus@lemmy.world avatar

What exactly is your point here? That they should have been good, grateful little wage slaves for their $19 hourly wage?

Kit ,

In what realm is $19/hr "lucky" wages? And who is working an office job for $11??

Gas station employees and fast food employees make $15/hr here and I'm in one of the most affordable cities in the US. Office work starts at around $20 for low skill positions.

there are plenty in the south who consider $19 an hour lucky

a lot of office jobs around the south pay really low and for management positions

there are some high paying jobs here as well but too few to go around and the only other ones really paying out are hard labor jobs such as construction or factory work

when biden got voted in was really hoping he would follow through on raising the minimum wage

economy is moving like molasses in part because of low pay

applaud these workers unionizing but without nationwide upset this may not be fixed any time soon

$19 is sickeningly low regardless of whether or not it is typical. It tells me Google hearkens yearns for the conditions of the Great Depression like Ford and Disney.

The ownership class will tremble before a communist revolution, but even that is better than the fury of the famished masses coming for aristocratic heads.

catloaf ,

*harkens, but perhaps you wanted "yearns", because harken means listen.

Changed, though listens for works in that disaster-is-good-for-business sense.

Holyginz ,

$19 is fucking nothing. Minimum wage adjusted for inflation would have been around $26 an hour several years ago. That's just a liveable wage. Wage increases are supposed to be from the bottom up. Pretty much guaranteed if you aren't an exec who needs the amount they earn slashed you are underpaid.

atro_city ,

Wow... so what now?

The city council video where they find out they're laid off: https://youtu.be/pZBtjNGes6s

Got_Bent ,

The comments on that video. Yikes.

Viking_Hippie ,

"AKSCHUALLY they were technically Cognizant employees on a limited contract so everything's fine" - random asshole or paid Google lickspittle

Got_Bent ,

We really have become a society that thrives on the suffering of others almost to the point of sexual pleasure. It's truly repugnant.

Zagorath ,

or paid Google lickspittle

Almost zero chance it's that. They don't need to pay people to do it when they know people are more than willing to do it for free due to a lifetime of capitalist indoctrination.

Viking_Hippie ,

They may not need to, but that doesn't mean they aren't. There seems to be an inverse relationship between wealth and skin thickness, which would make that of Google translucent..

Got_Bent ,

It only makes sense.

When you're poor and not powerful, you get shit on daily and you grow a certain impervious callous to the constant assaults.

When you're rich and powerful, nobody ever tells you no, so the slightest of criticism is entirely strange and foreign and therefore unacceptable.

Zagorath ,

Eh, I think the consequences if they got caught out doing this would far outweigh the tiny benefits they get from it. Not to mention how incredibly easy it would be to get caught.

Compare to other levers they could pull, like a small change in the YouTube algorithm to favour anti-union content. Which would have a far more wide-reaching impact, and would be far harder to prove causation.

Viking_Hippie ,

consequences if they got caught out doing this

You mean like when Amazon was caught doing it and there was a couple days of memes and then nothing? I think Google could weather that breeze..

As for that other lever, I'm pretty sure they've pulled it many times already 🤷
