We had a far more robust fifth estate 24 yeas ago, and that election is as much as anything what got us started down this path. Before 2000, election results were simply accepted.
I think that's a very small part of why people don't read newspapers anymore -- I think actually that the subset of things the media tells the truth about is way larger than the subset they lie about, and that the things that have replaced media as how people form their picture of the world are about 800% more prone to lying than the media was (for all its faults)
