Exactly what you didn't know you were looking but, in the back of your mind, you really were.

Willie ,

For some reason I thought this was going to have something to do with "Obey Wario, Destroy Mario!"

JackbyDev , in Finally finished Super Mario Land 2!

I don't think I ever beat it! I got to the final fight with Wario. I figured out I could turn it off right before I would die and not lose my progress. (When you lose all your lives you'd have to redo the boss levels and, you know, get the 6 Golden Coins.)

constantokra , in Finally finished Super Mario Land 2!

I loved that game. I'd recommend Link's awakening next. It's completely different, of course, but it's another great adaptation of something familiar for the gameboy.

Spinny OP ,

Funny you say that, I took a break from Link's Awakening to play Super Mario Land 2. Trying my hardest not to use a walkthrough but some of the late game dungeons are pretty tough compared to LTTP.

aniki ,

I remember some of those dungeons were ingeniously tricky to figure out but once you do you'll be kicking yourself.

constantokra ,

They are, yeah. I don't sweat walkthroughs anymore. I'm about 20 years too old to have enough time to wander around frustrated. I give it a go, and look for a hint when I can't figure it out.

Sombyr , in What are your favorite third party controllers?
@Sombyr@lemmy.zip avatar

The Mad Catz Dreampad for the Dreamcast is the only 3rd party controller I've ever encountered that's better than the original. Better grips, extra face buttons for fighters, a nicer analog stick. The whole thing just felt really high quality. The exact opposite of what you'd usually expect from Mad Catz.
Only issue is for whatever reason the white ones have a crooked d-pad. All the other colors are fine.

caseyweederman ,

Mad Catz will surprise you.
They got tapped to make the Rock Band keytar and they knocked it all the way out of the park by making a genuinely good midi controller that just happened to also be a video game controller.
Keep in mind, they could have phoned it in and not lost a cent, because what does Rock Band need? Four buttons? Red yellow green blue? Nope, here's 25 velocity-aware keys and a DIN port, and that's just for starters.
Here's a decent write-up I found: https://cdm.link/2010/10/hands-on-rock-band-3s-keytar-a-surprisingly-serious-80-midi-keyboard/

If you have one of the earlier cartridges, go explore the secret RAM area. It's one of the two games I know where you can do that.

That's pretty interesting! Mario's running through the game's code rewriting it like King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph...except with far less control.

Spinny OP ,

Never knew about this! My copy must be a 1.0 or a 1.1, I was able to explore the memory/ROM :)

I never finished this game as a kid . I had this with my original no color gameboy. Not sure how my mom paid for it . But she did go to jail one Christmas for shoplifting so maybe she didn't lol .

Congratulations! The music will stay with you forever.

The game always reminds me of being in the hospital getting my adenoids removed in 1992.

It's worth checking out Metropolis Street Racer and F355 Challenge if you're into driving games. Also Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX was really nicely done.

I loved my Dreamcast, such a pity it couldn't be developed further

Don’t forget about Star Wars Episode 1 Podracer!

Kirbys Dreamland

I remember being addicted to the first one until i managed the hard mdoe w.o. dying once. With that i find SML to also have great replay value.

amio , in Finally finished Super Mario Land 2!

Good job! SML2 always felt weird to me mechanics-wise, but the music and levels were really cool.

ame , in Finally finished Super Mario Land 2!

This game gave me an uncanny feeling as a kid!

Iirc I did this once when I was a much younger person. Fantastic game and incredibly challenging, especially near the end. Great work!

kratoz29 , in Finally finished Super Mario Land 2!

That is great! Never too late to get rid of the old backlog.

I only played the first one now that I remember haha.
