Our tech overlords tell us the AIs could enslave us, but they’re the ones serving up the world to computers on a silver platter and dreaming of becoming computers themselves then building them throughout the galaxy. They’re the real risk to humanity.

In The Matrix, humanity has been enslaved and live out their lives (mostly unknowingly) in a virtual environment created by intelligent machines who survive off human energy. But that’s quite a farfetched future. The threat posed to humanity isn’t from AI-powered machines wanting to stick us all in pods. Instead, it’s tech CEOs and the supposed free hand of the market that wants to hand the world over to computers on a silver platter — whether that’s through installing computers in the most mundane places where they’re absolutely not necessary, premised on the misguided belief that everything needs to be computable (and the corporate imperative to collect more data at any cost), or through serving up more and more of the planet’s resources to build massive warehouses of computation. It doesn’t end there though. Powerful people in the tech industry strongly desire the merging of man and machine, and to eventually be able to upload their minds — turning themselves into computers. And, as part of the longtermist philosophy, they seek to colonize the cosmos, but not as human beings. Their ultimate plans involve the installation of what are basically server farms on celestial bodies throughout the Virgo Supercluster playing host to “posthumans” — digital minds that have achieved (or surpassed) human intelligence.
