The year is 2029. Free Software finally has become the thing almost everyone uses because all commercial alternatives have been rendered unusable by mandatory “AI” integrations.

Due to extremely wide adoption, software projects can fund themselves with donations from just a small percentage of their user base.

Usability and accessibility testing has become common in Free Software development as more resources have become available and feedback is received from a much wider audience, leading to a much better user experience for everyone.

Hardware requirements for most people have stagnated as their common computing tasks can be done on a machine from 20 years ago without all the bloat.

Things are still rough around the edges and will probably remain that way but in general, users of different tools can inter-operate through standard file formats on whatever devices they happen to like best. Personal computers look actually personal as each is a reflection of its user’s needs.
