Random RPG memory: George Alec Effinger describing how disappointed he was (angry, even) with the quality of the Marid Audran/Budayeen sourcebook from R-Tal.
He and I were hosting a panel together, at I-Con on Long Island in the 90s, and the panel was about the relationship between folks who write static fiction, and RPG publishers who license novels for RPGs.
@SJohnRoss a friend of a friend was once in talks for film/TV rights to the Budayeen books, fell through I think. I don't remember hating the sourcebook, mostly I just thought it was cool it even existed.
@zarfeblong His short stories in Asimov's had been formative nerdlife for me, and a couple of his time travel novels as well, so it was a real joy. I kept it pro during the panel. I fanboyed him to pieces afterward. 😂
