It’s surprisingly easy — shockingly easy — for a small group of greedy, heartless people to ruin an entire planetary ecosystem.

Just provide them with capitalism, plus easy access to a huge amount of fossil fuels, and voilà! Before you know it, half the forests on Earth are gone, millions of species have been exterminated, the climate is in chaos, and civilization itself is at risk of collapse.

Well done.

@breadandcircuses sounds like a dystopian novel, is actually reality.

Color me naive.

I would have thought humanity would back-stop this avalanche, or at least try.

I’m doing whatever I can, but it seems as though, statistically, I’m impotent.

Remaining aware I suppose.

I heard the one about the Buddhist who held a candle at the White House to protest the Vietnam “war”.

He was told that his candle wouldn’t be acknowledged by those in power.

He replied “Clearly. It’s not for them, it’s to remind myself of my humanity”.

there is an item missing between capitalism and fossil fuels. technology.

one the first properly techno critical texts i ever read was unabomber manifesto, and tho i disagree with him plenty, two things sorta seem to hold true, and they bug me.

first is the deep problems with tech, and the other is how depressed and depressive modern leftism sometimes is.

@breadandcircuses it's ok to be angry about capitalism!

@breadandcircuses Probably worth to mark "Invention of the thermometer". I wonder how temperature was observed before it?
