The People’s Republic doesn’t want to invade Taiwan; they want to protect it from foreign aggression, particularly an invasion by the United States. You may have noticed that the sorts of naval vessels that the PLAN have commissioned would make invading the island rather difficult. That is intentional because it’s not for storming the beach, but defending it.

I really hope this isn’t the case; and the actions of the United States have really not helped in the slightest.
