@pixelfed@dansup are you considering adding the option to choose light or dark mode when opening the app for the first time? I actually prefer the light mode in Pixelfed's app, but it would've been nice to be able to preview it before choosing and logging in.
Also, are you considering using a dark shade of grey, like #222, instead of full black? It's the only reason I'm not using the dark mode, because it causes some eye strain for me.
@brunomiguel@pixelfed Yes, we will default to system color mode (either light or dark) but you will have the option to force a preference, and that color mode preference will be shared across devices and web/apps so you have a consistent experience no matter what option you choose!
We standardized an API for this so 3rd party apps can implement this too, that way you can use any (supported) app and it will remember your preference!
This goes beyond dark mode btw, there are other settings we remember across apps like the ability to disable CW and show all media, or force yourself to add alt text to media before you can post!
@pixelfed@dansup here's an example of what I might by a dark shade of gray and not full black. I have a custom userstyle for pixelfed.social, because I like browsing it with the dark mode on but the default is too dark and causes me eye strain
@dansup@pixelfed I might test a few colors and their contrast ratio, for accessibility purposes, and open an issue in the repo, if you don't mind. (I have chronic pain and that equals to shitty memory, so I'll likely forget by then 😅 )
