B:2nd term pres are notoriously bad in their 1st debate for reelection. They’re not used to being…questioned. Challenged. Having somebody in their face like that.
Obama got touched up by Romney in their 1st one. HW Bush got destroyed by Bill Clinton. Clinton in turn had trouble w wooden Bob Dole 1st time out
I slightly remember W doing ok against Kerry. But W was so fucking stupid “okay” was using complete sentences
One thing I'd like to point out, however. In the examples cited by #ElieMystal, not once was the "challenger" a former US President; the object of #impeachment...twice; a president that had attempted a #coup; an #insurrectionist; a former president found liable for #Rape; a thief of #ClassifiedDocuments, who never returned said documents when government came a-calling; a former president indicted for #conspiracy.

Maybe. But not for reasons said. Joe is used to being challenged. He's not some self-important demagogue sitting in an ivory tower. His entire term has been rwnj conspiracy challenges. 24/7. AND, his opponent is a stark raving, babbling, incoherent lunatic.
I think Trump reflexively jumped and said he'd debate because he feared looking weak. Then he immediately started changing the non-negotiable terms so that Biden would be the one to say no.
Trump is afraid to debate, and is playing games to offload the blame for them not happening onto Biden. I will be very surprised if either debate actually does happen.
@GottaLaff not sure we can compare the debates of past presidents with this sistuation. This all new terrirory and Biden has gotten some very savvy and sharp people working for him. My only concern is if they will turn the mic off when t tries to bulldoze Biden. t doesn’t want a live audience for some reason.
