I can't blame them when you'd use the apostrophe if it were a personal name instead of a personal pronoun. "It's" used to be the standard form for the possessive neuter actually, now it's considered nonstandard but it's non "incorrect" by any means
Have been trying to tell my coworkers this for two years now. We had a manager tell her whole department "I'll fire and black list whoever I want."
