The Houthis are an Iran-backed rebel group that has been attacking western commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea in opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
They've been doing this for ages though, and are just using the Israel - Gaza operation as an excuse to try and justify it.
That's an amicus brief for this case, filed with the Supreme Court by the great-great-grandson of Teddy Roosevelt, a historian who spends a great deal of time explaining the full context of the fourteenth from actual historical record and case law, including (and excoriating) Chase.
A lawyer and commentator for Lawfare declared it the best of the briefs he's seen, and he cited other excellent ones as well that do not rely on Chase.
It's 54 pages, so not for the timid, but I found it a fascinating read and anyone wanting to know the actual history will as well.
I'll never understand random acts of violence. In most of these cases, these attackers are mentally unstable; so it makes no sense to look for rationality in their reasoning for the attacks. But people lose their lives in a lot of these incidents and it's hard to not look for a reason.
In the referenced case in December, the attacker was basically a delusional ISIS sympathizer. He murdered a tourist despite himself having no real ties to ISIS (other than his delusional self-interest).
Why can't people just abide by basic tenants of "live and let live", "don't harm others for your own gain", etc.? It seems like some people make their entire existence about imposing their beliefs, problems, or desires onto other people. It's such a waste of energy and effort. It generates so much trauma and fear in our societies. There seems to be no solution that doesn't end in Orwellian dystopia.
I'm not entirely sure that a life of joy, education, empathy, and love would fix these attackers behaviors. I guess we'll never really know. In America, our random attackers often claim mental health problems are the reason for their actions, but people have had access to guns for a century and random shootings were not as commonplace a century ago. I know that copycat behavior and such can influence people as well, but that's a fucking depressing reason to take someone's life: that it was just something you saw someone else do?
I don't know what my point is. I just couldn't sleep and I feel like people are the worst.
In a leap forward, the new law supports independent repair and improves consumers’ access to affordable repair options, by introducing rules for reasonable prices for original parts as well as banning software practices which prevent independent repair and the use of compatible and reused spare parts.
“I’m sorry that [we were] not able to protect your loved ones,” she told a crowd of thousands at a vigil. “You belong here; you are valuable for our society.”
sounds like the support from the community afterwards was pretty strong.. and reading the attacker's comments, he's one of those guys who romanticize the Confederacy among other racist things..
It's the same pretty much everywhere and anytime conservatives try to use violence. They think people will flock to their cause but don't get that the vast majority of people, regardless of ideology, do not want to kill people and find murder reprehensible. This leads to these terrorists losing ground constantly and driving people who'd at least been uninterested in their worldview into being vehemently against it. Terrorism like this results in outcomes to the contrary of what the terrorists were trying to achieve.
Guy has to be connected to the sherif in some way right? Or is he genuinely pulling a double bluff and this was his intended outcome of the theft, ie national attention?
The paper says the guy isn't connected to the cops, the suspects, or their families. Someone in another thread speculated that it might be someone connected to the victim.
Additional inspections? While a good thing, scarcity of inspections/inspectors was certainly not the root cause of the accident. Perhaps they are not publishing the actual root cause and corrective action publicly, but anytime a vendor blames an operator or just tacks on another layer of inspection....
