Disappointing moderation on other instances

I don't really know which community to post this in, I think this is the most relevant one?

I've recently spent a bit more time on lemmy.world and I have to say they don't seem super keen on removing trolls and transphobes, same for instances like lemmings.world.

The moderators seem to be perfectly aware of transphobic replies, vague threats, misinformation, and obvious trolling, yet they hardly remove any of the offending replies, and rarely if ever ban anyone. Certainly not often enough to make the network less toxic.

This post was mostly to vent, but I would also like to ask: when you report someone, who receives the report? Mods on my instance? The mods of the specific community I'm reporting from?

Sorry if this is the wrong place.

kristina ,

only places that care about banning transphobes are here, hexbear, and lemmygrad really. i mod c/traa on hexbear and how we deal with this is by having 26 fairly active trans mods. we spread the workload out on banning people, we usually have a response to ban within 5-30 minutes, sometimes its instantaneous. we care a lot about making sure as few people as possible see abusive material and to make sure even the mods have not many interactions by spreading the burden of dealing with transphobia out a ton.

i add pretty much anyone that is a trans socialist to the mod team if they ask. i dont like the idea of having a clique, it should be easy to join, i do semi regular asks if anyone wants to join

also, on top of our 26 mods, we have 15 admins that help with bans, a bit over half of whom are trans. which is about proportionate to the userbase

While I'm not personally a fan of hexbear or lemmygrad it sounds like you're doing a very good job with the moderation.

Any community demanding "be civil" can fuck right off, because they're almost guaranteed to protect trolls and bastards from any meaningful condemnation.

From my own point of view (which nobody else on this planet has to share) I like how these mods seem to roll… I’m very happy to encounter liars, flamers, trolls, the misinformed, provocateurs, satirists, deluded individuals, disingenuous actors, bots, cat fishes, psychopaths etc etc online because it keeps me sharp - I’d hate to have a drip fed supply of agreeable posts and interactions that never challenged nor jarred me.

On an instance with “world” in the title I’d be very disappointed if everybody was of similar views and opinions. Remember, we’re all strangers with our own motivations, world view, limits and red lines. These can be vastly different… but if we retreat to a safe space, echo chamber, whatever, we will never see how others see the world. We will never interact outside of our tiny social (media) circle. Imagine having exactly the same world view at 50 as you did at 15. Might as well join a religion/cult.

People spreading misinformation to erode my rights and cause violence against me is maybe slightly different from a difference in opinion. Additionally, I think the major instances (at least the general ones) should hold themselves to a higher standard than niche instances.

EDIT: Honestly thinking this is about safe spaces is very tone deaf.

/c/libertyhub is on this instance and has a blessing from the instance admin.

I'm not familiar with this community nor can I find it on blåhaj?

Oh yes, I forgot. I blocked them a while ago which is why I cant see them.

EDIT: I also find their presence here somewhat disappointing. They seem very focused on being polarizing and asking people to not vote biden rather than promoting any sort of alternative, in addition to being needlessly aggressive towards anyone who disagrees with them.

LinkOpensChest_wav ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

We have several active members who are planning to vote Biden, and we've had at least two posts about it. I've often encouraged users to make a post about why they're voting for Biden, but they've almost always declined, which tells me they may have just intended to argue in the comments. As long as these posts don't defend the current system and are sensitive to the feelings of people who have lost loved ones to Biden's policies and actions, this has always been allowed and even welcomed.

It's a community for leftists though, so it should come from a leftist perspective. Managing a community like this is hard, because it by definition will exclude groups hostile to basic leftist theory, such as fascists, conservatives, and liberals. That's really the intent of the community -- I saw a need for a space where we're not constantly put on the defensive.

I blocked the community mostly because I didn't like the overly aggressive responses and the lack of any discussion around alternatives etc. but if things have changed since I blocked (which was shortly after it's inception) then that's good.

I feel like I'm mostly responsible for that, and I'm making an effort not to be so rude and aggressive.

when you report someone, who receives the report? Mods on my instance? The mods of the specific community I'm reporting from?

When a report is made, it goes to three instances.

  1. The instance of the person making the report
  2. The instance of the account being reported
  3. The instance of the community in which the content was posted

Each instance only gets a single copy of the report and that report can be actioned by the admin of the instance the report is on, or moderators of the community. Only a single report is generated for each instance even if it meets multiple criteria, and it is one report per instance, not one report per admin/moderator. Marking a report as complete on one instance does not mark it as complete on another instance.

If a report leads to content removal, that removal will only federate if the reported content is removed by a moderator of the community, or by an admin of the instance that hosts the community or the user. If removed by any other admin, the removal doesn't federate to other instances, and is purely removed for local users.

vzq ,

When a report is made, it goes to four instances.

1…2…3

But they were all deceived, for another report was made?

Trainguyrom ,

1...2...5!

Blocking them directly is the way to go.

I just don't like the idea that the moderators tolerate this sort of behavior.

jahtnamas ,

most of the users i have blocked are from there, and it's not a very long list either

I noticed months ago that transphobic comments were being tolerated in communities on lemmy.world, which was one of several things that disillusioned me of the instance. Unfortunately I didn't take screenshots, so I can't recall exactly which communities I saw such comments, and I'd really hate to speculate. The comments I saw left up were the usual TERFy hot takes about women's sports.

Reports go directly to the community moderators, and you can find that list in the sidebar aka under "community info."

Reports may also go directly to admins, but I'm not sure. If you have an instance level concern, it's probably best to contact an admin.

cowboycrustation ,
@cowboycrustation@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Reports do go to admins, at least on this instance. There's a bot that shows lemmy reports on a matrix channel. Not sure if there's a generic Lemmy interface that sends reports to admins, though.

Thank you for confirming this. I don't use matrix so I didn't know.
